Compound Period

Contextualization

Studying the grammatical structures of the Portuguese language is essential for us to understand the complexity and richness of our language. One of the most important structures in this sense is the compound sentence, which is used to construct more elaborate sentences with richer meanings. Understanding it properly will allow you to formulate clearer, more precise, and expressive sentences and texts.

In this project, we will delve into the study of the compound sentence and its different types. We will explore the compound sentence by coordination, by subordination, and by coordination and subordination simultaneously. This is a slightly more advanced topic in grammar teaching, but it brings with it the potential to enhance our communication and writing skills.

Effective communication is an essential skill in today's world. From talking to other people in a casual environment to writing academic texts or professional reports, being able to express ideas clearly and understandably is fundamental. Understanding the compound sentence facilitates the construction of more structured messages, allowing for better communication.

Introduction

Portuguese, like other languages, has numerous ways of expressing thoughts, ideas, and feelings. One of the most elaborate forms is through the compound sentence, which is a structure formed by two or more coordinated or subordinate clauses.

The compound sentence by coordination is formed when two or more clauses are syntactically independent, meaning that each clause has a complete meaning on its own. The compound sentence by subordination occurs when one clause depends on the other to make sense. There are also compound sentences by coordination and subordination, which have independent and dependent clauses in the same structure.

Our goal with this project is to deepen our knowledge in these structures and explore their applicability in different contexts. For this, we suggest the following resources:

These materials will help you better understand the theory behind the compound sentence, its characteristics, and uses.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Dramatizing Compound Sentences

Project Objective: The objective of this activity is to apply and deepen the knowledge about the compound sentence in a playful and collaborative way, creating a theatrical piece where the dialogues are composed exclusively of compound sentences.

Detailed Project Description: In this project, groups will need to write a script for a short play. The script must contain at least 10 lines for each character, all formed by compound sentences.

The theatrical piece should address a theme chosen by the students, which must be relevant and current, allowing students to conduct interdisciplinary research involving History, Sociology, or Philosophy.

Materials Needed: Internet access for research, paper, and pen for the script.

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group must choose a theme for the theatrical piece that is relevant and current, and that allows for interdisciplinary research involving History, Sociology, or Philosophy.
  3. With the theme in hand, the groups should research the subject, looking for information to help in the script's elaboration.
  4. Next, the students should create a script for the play. The script must consist of at least 10 lines for each character, all formed by compound sentences. Remember that each compound sentence must have a complete meaning on its own.
  5. Once the script is ready, the students should rehearse the play. During rehearsals, they should ensure that all lines are clear and understandable.
  6. The project culminates with the presentation of the theatrical piece to the class. Each group must present their play and receive feedback from the teacher and classmates.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Theatrical Piece Script: Each group must deliver the written script of the play, with all character lines in compound sentences. The script should be clear and contain a detailed description of the play, including setting and direction.

  2. Theatrical Piece Presentation: Each group must perform the presentation of the theatrical piece, demonstrating the practical application of compound sentences.

  3. Report: After the presentation, students must write a report on the project, following the following structure:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, explanation of the relevance of studying the compound sentence, and the chosen theme of the theatrical piece.
    • Development: Discussion on the script construction, difficulties encountered, and how the theory of the compound sentence was applied. Presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Reflection on the learnings acquired and conclusions drawn about the importance of the compound sentence in dialogue construction.
    • Bibliography: Citation of the sources used for research and script construction.

We hope the project provides significant and stimulating learning for all involved!
