Adjective Clauses

Contextualization

Within our wonderful Portuguese language, there are several grammatical structures that help us express our thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. One of them is the adjective clauses. But you may wonder: what are these clauses? Why are they important?

Adjective clauses are small clauses that serve to qualify a noun, just like adjectives do. In them, we can express a characteristic, a quality, or a circumstance of the noun to which the clause is linked. In general, these clauses are introduced by the words 'que' (restrictive adjective clauses) or 'como' (explanatory adjective clauses). Each of these types adds a different type of information to the noun they are linked to, so understanding the difference between them is crucial.

You might think this is not so relevant, after all, we speak Portuguese every day without necessarily knowing all the grammatical rules, right? Wrong! Studying grammar and its specificities is essential for clear and effective communication. Moreover, this knowledge is fundamental for language exams, such as ENEM and college entrance exams.

In the real world, we are part of a society that communicates in different ways. Written language, for example, is present in newspapers, magazines, books, scientific articles, essays, reports, emails, and even in social media texts. In all these situations, the proper use of adjective clauses makes a difference, as it allows conveying information more precisely.

As an initial resource, I suggest reading the chapter on adjective clauses from the book 'Gramática da Língua Portuguesa' by Pasquale Cipro Neto and Ulisses Infante. Additionally, for a deeper understanding of the topic, the website 'Português na Internet' (portuguesnainternet.com) has a section dedicated exclusively to the study of adjective clauses. As a complement, the YouTube channel 'Português com a Prof. Eliane Vieira' has a playlist with several explanatory videos on the subject.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Building The Bridge of Adjective Clauses'

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to understand the application of adjective clauses in a practical context, distinguishing between restrictive and explanatory adjective clauses, as well as exercising collaboration and teamwork.

Detailed Project Description

The project consists of creating a theatrical script or a short film where adjective clauses play a fundamental role in constructing the narrative. Each group must plan, write, and present this play or film, using their creative skills to demonstrate how adjective clauses can be used to enrich language.

In addition, students will also be challenged to build a 'Bridge of Adjective Clauses' using recyclable materials. For each scene or excerpt of the script/film that uses an adjective clause, the group must add a piece to their bridge, symbolizing the bridge of meaning that adjective clauses create.

Required Materials

  1. Recyclable materials for building the 'Bridge of Adjective Clauses'.
  2. Video recording equipment (can be a smartphone).
  3. Internet access for research and study material consultation.
  4. Material for note-taking and script writing.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Students must divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. The group must choose a theme for the theatrical script or short film. This theme can be based on a topic from another field of knowledge, such as History, Biology, Philosophy, Literature, or current events. This will involve a second discipline in the project.
  3. After choosing the theme, the group must study the use of adjective clauses and plan their use in the script. The goal is for the adjective clauses to be indispensable for understanding the story.
  4. Write the script, making sure to incorporate the adjective clauses effectively.
  5. Alongside the script, students must build the 'Bridge of Adjective Clauses' using recyclable materials, remembering to add a piece to the bridge each time an adjective clause is used in the script.
  6. After the script is completed and the bridge is built, the group must rehearse and record the presentation, if they opt for the short film, or prepare for the live performance, if they opt for the theatrical script.
  7. Each group must present their work to the class. The bridge must be presented along with the script, visually demonstrating the amount of adjective clauses employed.
  8. After the presentation, the groups must write a detailed project report, following the guidelines below.

Project Deliverables and Written Report

  1. Introduction: The group must provide context on the use of adjective clauses, explain the project proposal, and briefly describe the activities carried out.
  2. Development: In this part, the group must explain the theory behind adjective clauses and how they were applied in the script. The creative process, the construction of the 'Bridge of Adjective Clauses', and the methodologies used during the project should be detailed. The results, such as the reception of the play/film by classmates and the construction of the bridge, should be discussed.
  3. Conclusion: Here, the group must summarize the main points of the project, explain what they learned from the experience, and draw conclusions about the use and importance of adjective clauses.
  4. Bibliography: Finally, the group must indicate the research sources used for the script and report preparation.
