Syntactic Functions of the Relative Pronoun

Contextualization

The Portuguese language is rich and full of nuances, where each word, in its different positions and contexts, can acquire various meanings and functions. Within this complexity, we have relative pronouns, which are words used to replace terms already mentioned earlier, such as 'que', 'quem', 'cujo', 'onde', etc. They are fundamental for textual cohesion and coherence, promoting the connection between sentences and avoiding the unnecessary repetition of terms.

However, each relative pronoun can assume different syntactic functions, that is, how they relate to other terms within the sentence, providing different interpretations. Understanding these functions is crucial not only for comprehending and producing more elaborate texts but also for taking exams such as ENEM, where these abilities are constantly evaluated.

Now, imagine if in our daily lives, every time we talk about a book, an idea, or a place we like, we had to repeat its full name? It would be strange, wouldn't it? That's where relative pronouns come in, making our communication more fluid and natural. In addition, they play a fundamental role in structuring our sentences, ensuring that the information is clear and organized.

The importance of studying relative pronouns and their syntactic functions goes beyond the classroom. They help in forming arguments that are clearer and more objective, facilitating communication in professional, academic, and even personal contexts. Imagine having to write a report at work, a dissertation at university, or even a love letter. Knowing how to use relative pronouns correctly can make all the difference!

Practical Activity: "Discovering the Syntactic Functions of the Relative Pronoun"

Project Objective

Provide students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the syntactic functions of the relative pronoun, through analysis, text production, and oral presentation, thus stimulating their research, writing, communication, proactivity, and teamwork skills.

Detailed Description of the Project

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for one week.

Students will investigate the different uses and functions of relative pronouns in Portuguese. To do this, the groups should analyze various texts (literary, journalistic, among others) and identify the syntactic functions of the relative pronouns present in these texts. Subsequently, the groups should create a text of their own, correctly using the relative pronouns and their functions. Finally, each group will give an oral presentation, explaining the concepts learned and presenting the text created.

Required materials

  • Various texts (books, magazines, newspapers, among others)
  • Computer or notebook (for research and text production)
  • Presentation material (cardboard, colored pens, among others)
  • Camera (for recording the presentation)

Activity Step by Step

  1. Organize yourselves into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Research on various texts (literary, journalistic, among others) and identify the syntactic functions of the relative pronouns present in these texts.
  3. Based on the research carried out, create a text of your own which correctly uses relative pronouns in their various functions.
  4. Prepare an oral presentation explaining the functions of the relative pronoun in Portuguese and presenting the text the group created.
  5. Record the presentation and submit it for evaluation.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, students should:

  1. Submit a report containing the research carried out, analysis of the texts, discussion of the functions of the relative pronouns, the text created by the group, and a reflection on the learning gained. The report should be divided into: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
  2. Present the work orally, explaining the concepts learned and presenting the text created. The presentation must be recorded and submitted for evaluation.

In the report, in the development section, it is expected that the student should explain the theory of relative pronouns, the syntactic functions they perform, the analysis of the texts carried out by the group, and the creation of their own text. The students should also discuss the results obtained, with a focus on the use and functions of the relative pronouns.

In the conclusion, students should reflect on what they learned from the project, how it influenced their understanding of the use of relative pronouns, and how it can be applied in the future.

It is important that, in addition to the sources already mentioned in the contextualization, students seek others to carry out the project, always indicating the bibliography used in the report.
