Adverbial Clauses

Contextualization

Adverbial clauses are fundamental structures for constructing sentences in the Portuguese language. They function as a kind of 'lens' through which we see the actions and events of the world, adding information about time, place, manner, condition, among others.

For example, in the sentence 'I go to school when the sun rises,' the phrase 'when the sun rises' is an adverbial clause of time and gives us information about the time when the action of 'going to school' takes place. Understanding this type of structure and knowing how to use it in your own writing and speech is essential for effective communication.

The ability to understand and correctly use adverbial clauses is important both in academic contexts and in everyday life. They constantly appear in books, articles, news, and even in informal conversations, increasing the need to understand them.

Furthermore, being able to manipulate adverbial clauses is a useful skill for constructing more complex and meaningful discourses. Knowing how to use these structures can enhance your writing and speech, allowing for clearer and more precise communication.

Practical Activity: 'Exploring the World of Adverbial Clauses'

Objective

The objective of the project is to deepen students' understanding of adverbial clauses, enabling effective manipulation of these clauses in both writing and conversation. This project involves research, text analysis, production of original material, and report writing, stimulating technical and socio-emotional skills.

Project Description

Each group, composed of 3 to 5 students, will conduct an in-depth study of adverbial clauses through text analysis, production of examples, and presentation in various formats.

Materials Needed:

  • Computer with internet access.
  • Books and/or articles on the topic.
  • Materials for presentation production (PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides, etc.)

Step by Step:

  1. Research (2 hours): The group will conduct in-depth research on adverbial clauses, exploring the recommended resources and others they deem relevant. They should focus on the concepts, types, and uses of adverbial clauses.

  2. Text Analysis (3 hours): The group will choose three types of texts (a book, a news article, and an informal conversation, for example) and identify and analyze the adverbial clauses present.

  3. Production of Examples (2 hours): Using the acquired knowledge, students will create examples of using adverbial clauses for each type of analyzed text. They should explain the function and impact of each one.

  4. Presentation (2 hours): The group will develop a presentation on the results of their work. It can include slides, infographics, videos, etc. This material should be engaging and didactic, facilitating the understanding of other students in the class.

  5. Report (1 hour): Each group member must contribute to writing a detailed report on the project, explaining the learning process, results obtained, and conclusions. This report should follow the four main topics:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance, real-world application, and project objective.
    • Development: Theory behind the theme, detailed description of activities performed, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of results.
    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Sources used during the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

Each group member should dedicate five to ten hours to the project. The total estimated time for project completion is one month.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  • The created presentation, which should be self-explanatory and didactic.
  • The written report, detailed as described above.
  • A list of the created examples of using adverbial clauses, indicating the type of text and the function of each clause.

These deliveries will allow evaluating not only the knowledge acquired about adverbial clauses but also the collaboration and teamwork, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity of the students.
