False Cognates

Contextualization

False friends are words that have a similar spelling in two or more languages, but with different meanings. In the field of linguistics, they are also known as 'false friends'. Learning to identify and understand these terms in the process of learning a new language is essential to avoid misunderstandings and improve linguistic competence.

In Spanish teaching, for example, there are many examples of false friends. Many words in Spanish seem similar to Portuguese, but have completely different meanings. A famous example is the word 'embarazada', which in Spanish means 'pregnant', but is commonly confused with the Portuguese 'embaraçada'.

Introduction

The importance of false friends in teaching Spanish comes from being a common trap for Portuguese speakers, especially for beginners. Ignoring the existence of these 'false friends' can lead to confusing and sometimes embarrassing situations. Therefore, knowledge about false friends can help in building more efficient communicative skills in Spanish.

The role of false friends goes beyond linguistic learning. In the real world, they can be crucial to avoid misunderstandings in professional, academic, and travel situations. It can be said that mastering false friends is a skill that can contribute to the formation of a global citizen capable of effectively communicating in different contexts.

As reliable resources to delve into the topic, you can consult academic articles on contrastive linguistics and learn about examples of false friends. In addition, there are educational websites dedicated to teaching languages that present lists of false friends with examples of how they are used in real contexts. Practical Activity: 'Hunting False Friends'

Activity Title:

'Hunting False Friends'

Project Objective:

Identify, understand, and use false friends in different contexts of Spanish language use.

Detailed Project Description:

This practical activity consists of creating a bilingual presentation (Portuguese-Spanish) in the form of a board game that involves the use of 'false friends'. The game should include clear rules, question and answer cards (using false friends), an attractive board, and an instruction manual for playing.

The goal of the game is to provide players with the opportunity to identify and correctly use false friends in sentences or dialogues. Since the game will be played in the classroom, it should be designed to promote collaboration among participants.

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard for building the board and question/answer cards.
  • Colored markers for creating an attractive design on the board.
  • Online or printed resources for researching false friends.
  • Computer with presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.) to prepare the practical activity presentation.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

  1. Groups of 3 to 5 students should research and compile a list of at least 30 false friends, along with their meanings in Portuguese and Spanish.
  2. After building the list, students should create sentences or short dialogues in Spanish that use these false friends correctly.
  3. Students should create a board game using cardboard. The game should be divided into spaces, where each space represents a question or challenge related to a false friend.
  4. Each group should produce question/answer cards that correspond to the spaces on the board. The cards should indicate the false friend to be used and the sentence or dialogue where it fits.
  5. The group should create an instruction manual with the game rules.
  6. The activity should be presented by each group to the class. The groups should explain how the game works, the rules, and conduct a demonstrative round.

At the end of the practical activity, the groups should produce a report in the form of a written document, which should be divided into four main parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  • Introduction: Description of the context of false friends, their relevance and applicability in the Spanish language, and the project's objective.
  • Development: Presentation of the theory of false friends, detailed description of the game (including rules, design, and how false friends were used), the research methodology and game construction, and discussion of the results of demonstrative rounds.
  • Conclusions: Reflection on the experience of learning about false friends through the game, main learnings, and conclusions on the effectiveness of the game as a learning tool.
  • Bibliography: List of all resources used for research, game development, and report production.
