Compound Period

Introduction

A compound sentence in Portuguese is a structure that is abundant in complexity and richness, made up of two or more sentences that relate to each other, creating a diversity of meanings and interpretations for our linguistic daily life. In this context, we have developed a challenging and thrilling educational project, where you will be linguistic detectives, solving the puzzles of the wonderful world of compound sentences.

In order to understand the compound sentence, one must first understand what a sentence is. In grammar, a sentence is a sequence of words that, put together, convey a complete thought. It can be simple, with just one clause, or compound, with two or more clauses. The clauses that compose the sentence can relate to each other in different ways, establishing nuances of meaning that enrich the communication.

A compound sentence can be formed by coordination or subordination. In coordination, the clauses are syntactically independent, that is, each one of them has a full meaning. However, they are joined together to express correlated ideas. In subordination, one clause depends on the other in order to have meaning. The main clause, which has a meaning by itself, is completed by a subordinate clause, which only has meaning when connected to the main one.

Our daily communication is permeated by compound sentences and, therefore, mastering this concept is essential to understand and produce effective texts. The numerous ways in which the clauses are connected make it possible to express relations of cause, consequence, condition, purpose, among others, giving more richness and precision to the message.

Portuguese is spoken by thousands of people around the world, each with their culture and their way of expressing themselves. Mastering the compound sentence is a way of improving how we communicate and connect with people. Furthermore, a good command of language strengthens argumentation and persuasion, increasingly important skills in today's world, be it to defend an idea in a debate or to convince a client in a negotiation.

To enhance your learning and dive deeper into the subject, we recommend the following resources:

  1. Portuguese Grammar: Compound sentence - Toda Matéria.
  2. Compound sentence: Understand it once and for all - Stoodi.
  3. Compound sentence by coordination and subordination - Brasil Escola.

For each resource, pay attention not only to the definitions and explanations, but also to the proposed examples and exercises. They will help to consolidate the content and prepare for the practical activity proposed below.

Practical Activity: "Compound Sentence Detectives"

Title:

"Compound Sentence Detectives"

Objective of the Project:

To develop the understanding of the concept of a compound sentence through the analysis and creation of literary, journalistic, and academic texts.

Detailed Description of the project:

In this project, the students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will "investigate" a specific style of text: literary, journalistic, or academic.

The Compound Sentence Detectives' mission will be to immerse themselves in the chosen text genre, analyze the structure of the compound sentences found in the text, and identify how they are formed. After this stage, the groups will create a story, a news report, or a scientific article, using compound sentences to express their ideas.

Necessary materials:

  • Reference texts for each text genre;
  • Notebook or PC with Internet access;
  • Notebook and pen for notes;
  • Access to Google Docs or another online text editing platform for group work.

Detailed step-by-step to perform the activity:

  1. Choice of text genre: Each group will choose a text genre to investigate: literary, journalistic, or academic.

  2. Analysis of reference texts: The groups will read and analyze reference texts of the chosen textual genre, discussing and making notes on the use of compound sentences.

  3. Group discussion: Each group will hold discussion sessions to debate on the texts analyzed and the use of compound sentences.

  4. Text creation: With the acquired knowledge, each group will create a story, a news report, or a scientific article, using compound sentences.

  5. Review and final adjustments: The groups will review the produced text, making the necessary adjustments, and focusing on the correct and coherent use of compound sentences.

  6. Writing and submission of the report: After concluding the text, the groups will write a report detailing the investigation and creation process. The report must follow the proposed structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must submit:

  • The created text (story, news report, or scientific article), duly reviewed and formatted;
  • The report containing:

Introduction: Overview of the project, its relevance, and objective. Students must explain what a compound sentence is and why it is relevant to communication.

Development: Description of the stages of the project, the methodology used, and the obtained results. The groups must describe how they analyzed the reference texts and how they used their knowledge to create their own text.

Conclusion: Review of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project. Students must reflect on how the project contributed to their understanding of the compound sentence and to the development of their socioemotional skills (time management, communication, problem solving, creative thought, proactivity, etc.).

Bibliography: References of the sources used during the work, such as websites, books, videos, etc.

The delivery format will be digital, with the files sent by email or shared via a link. Please, make sure to format the text and the report correctly, following ABNT standards.
