Language is not just a set of words and grammatical rules we use to convey our thoughts. It is a complex social phenomenon that actively participates in the construction and identification of individuals and communities. Therefore, it is essential that we also learn the underlying concepts of the linguistic phenomenon. One of these concepts is 'enunciation'.

Enunciation is fundamental for us to understand how language is used to communicate and interact in the everyday world. It refers to the set of elements that are present when a speech act occurs, including: the speaker, or enunciator, who produces the statement; the addressee, that is, to whom the statement is intended; the context, which is the circumstances in which the communication occurs; and the statement, which is the message conveyed.

This notion of enunciation is of utmost importance, as each statement carries a series of meanings that go beyond its explicit content. For example, the same word, phrase, or expression can have different meanings depending on who says it, to whom, when, and where. Think, for example, of the difference between hearing 'I love you' from a friend, from a romantic partner, or from a stranger on the street. In each case, the very act of enunciation alters the meaning of the statement.

Importance of Enunciation

In a world increasingly dominated by digital communication, understanding enunciation is more essential than ever. Every message we send on social networks, every comment we make on a blog or forum, every email or text message we send - all are acts of enunciation that occur in a specific context and can be interpreted in various ways depending on that context.

Furthermore, knowledge about enunciation is also crucial for the critical understanding of the discourses present in our society. By understanding enunciation, we become more capable of recognizing the linguistic choices of politicians, advertisers, journalists, and other communication professionals, and understanding how they can affect the way we perceive and interpret their messages.

Whether in the interpretation of literary texts, in the understanding of media discourses, in participating in debates, or in the production of written messages, understanding enunciation helps us interact more effectively and critically with the world around us.

Activity Title:

'Enunciation on Stage: Understanding Communication through Dramatization'

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to apply the concept of enunciation in a practical and experiential situation. Students will create and present a short theatrical piece, where they will explore the influence of context, enunciator, and addressee on the interpretation of a statement.

Project Description:

The groups must, initially, study and delve into the concept of enunciation. Then, the students will develop the script of a situation that clearly illustrates the influence of enunciation aspects on the interpretation of a statement: who speaks (enunciator), to whom it is spoken (addressee), what is spoken (statement), and in what situation (context).

Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must create a short theatrical piece (5 to 10 minutes) that clearly expresses the concept of enunciation.

• Paper and pen for script creation
• Materials for creating scenery, costumes, and props (optional)

Step by Step:

1. Concept Study: Students should seek information about the concept of enunciation. The additional resources provided in the introduction can be a good starting point.

2. Script Definition: The group must create a script of a situation that involves a clear manifestation of enunciation. The script should contain at least one clear example of how enunciation influences the interpretation of a statement.

3. Role Division: Students must decide who will represent each character in the situation they created. It is important that all group members actively participate in the dramatization.

4. Rehearsals: The group must rehearse the piece. During rehearsals, students should discuss the choices made in terms of enunciation and how they affect the interpretation of the statement.

5. Presentation of the Piece: Each group must present their theatrical piece to the class.

6. Report Writing: After the presentation, each group must write a report discussing the concept of enunciation and explaining how it was applied in the theatrical piece.

Project Deliverables:

Students must submit the script of the piece, a video of the theatrical piece presentation (live presentation recording), and a written report. The report should be divided into four main sections:

1. Introduction: Provide context for the concept of enunciation, explaining its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.

2. Development: Explain the concept of enunciation and how it was employed in the activity. Describe in detail the theatrical piece created by the group, elucidating the script construction and dialogue choices. Also, discuss the methodologies used to carry out the activity.

3. Conclusion: Present the learnings obtained from the project, focusing on the main points of enunciation highlighted throughout the work. Explain how the choices made in the project emphasized the importance of enunciation in the communication process.

4. Bibliography: List all information sources used during the project, including books, websites, videos, among others.

The deadline for submitting all parts of the project is one week after the date of the theatrical piece presentations.
