Verbal Agreement

Contextualization

Theoretical Description of the Topic

Subject-verb agreement is one of the most important linguistic aspects that allows language to be clear and understandable. It is the relationship established between the subject and the verb in a sentence, with the verb flexing to coincide with the number and person of the subject.

Basically, if the subject is singular, the verb will also be singular; if the subject is plural, the verb should be used in the plural form. In addition, subject-verb agreement can be influenced by issues of proximity, attraction, or emphasis.

However, this grammatical aspect is more complex than it seems at first glance. There are several cases and exceptions that need to be considered to ensure correct agreement, such as compound subject before the verb, compound subject after the verb, subject with words that only have a plural form, among others.

Importance and Practical Applications

Subject-verb agreement is essential for clear and correct understanding of a sentence or statement. Furthermore, a correct use of subject-verb agreement shows an elegant and sophisticated language, which can be very useful in various real-life situations, such as in a job interview, writing an article, or even in a simple conversation.

In our daily lives, we use subject-verb agreement continuously, whether when writing an email, sending a text message, making a comment on a social network, or even when speaking. Ensuring correct agreement is essential to avoid misunderstandings and ensure effective communication.

Activity

Title: "Subject-Verb Agreement in the Real World"

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' knowledge of subject-verb agreement, exploring real cases of usage in different contexts.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, should choose different types of texts present in our daily lives and analyze them from the perspective of subject-verb agreement. These texts may include professional correspondence, social media posts, news, scientific articles, dialogue transcriptions, among others.

After choosing the sources, the groups should identify and highlight instances of subject-verb agreement in the selected texts. Then, they should identify correct and incorrect examples, correcting the latter.

The final stage of the project will involve the production of new texts based on the corrections made, showing how correct subject-verb agreement can alter the meaning and clarity of a sentence.

Required Materials

  • Texts from various sources, which can be found online or in books, newspapers, magazines.
  • Pen and paper for notes and corrections (or a digital text editor).
  • Laptop or desktop for research and production of the final report.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should select the texts to be analyzed, considering source diversification.
  3. Identify examples of subject-verb agreement in the texts, both correct and incorrect.
  4. Correct cases of subject-verb agreement that are wrong in the selected texts.
  5. Rewrite excerpts of the texts where corrections were made, highlighting the importance of subject-verb agreement for text clarity and precision.
  6. Produce the final report, which should include the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Written report, containing:

    • Introduction: Project context, theme relevance, and work objectives.
    • Development: Theory on subject-verb agreement, detailed description of the methodology, and presentation of the results obtained (analyses and corrections made).
    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, learnings, and conclusions on the importance of subject-verb agreement in different contexts.
    • Bibliography: References of the analyzed texts and theoretical sources used.
  2. Oral presentation of the work to the class, highlighting the main points of the report.

This way, in addition to deepening knowledge about subject-verb agreement, students will have the opportunity to exercise skills in teamwork, research, critical analysis, text production, oral presentation, and time management.
