Text interpretation is an essential skill in any area of knowledge. It is through the interpretation of texts that we can understand the information we read, whether in a book, newspaper, magazine, in the digital medium, etc. Thus, this skill is present in our daily lives and plays a fundamental role in our educational and professional development.
Introduction
In the context of High School, text interpretation gains even greater prominence, as it is a skill required in practically all subjects and, including, in important exams such as ENEM. Therefore, it is important to develop this competence, which implies much more than just reading the text. Interpretation involves a deep understanding of aspects such as the context in which the text was written, the author's intention, among others.
Understanding a text requires the recognition of main and secondary ideas, the identification of thematic progression and the compositional structure of the text, and the understanding of the sense relations established through cohesive resources, among other aspects. Thus, textual interpretation is a complex skill that involves a series of sub-competencies and requires considerable cognitive effort.
Contextualization
Text interpretation is much more than just an academic skill. It is fundamental in various situations in our daily lives. For example, to understand the news we read on the internet or in the newspaper, to comprehend a contract before signing it, or even to understand the messages we receive on our cell phones.
Moreover, in an increasingly digital world, this ability to interpret texts becomes even more relevant. Every day we are bombarded with a multitude of information in textual formats and we need to know how to interpret them properly. Without this skill, we run the risk of being manipulated, of understanding the information incorrectly, or even of not understanding anything.
Activity: The Journey of the Text
Project Objective
To improve students' ability to interpret texts, expanding their comprehension and skills in various aspects of interpretative reading, through the creation of a thematic digital magazine, in which they will make critical analyses of various types of texts.
Detailed Project Description
The groups, composed of 3 to 5 students, must choose a theme of their interest. Based on this theme, each group will search for different types of texts to analyze and interpret, whether journalistic, literary, scientific, philosophical, historical, etc., totaling a minimum of five texts. The proposal is that these texts, later on, will be integrated into the digital magazine created by the group.
The digital magazine should be developed in a blog format or similar platform. The template of the magazine is up to the group's choice, however, the magazine will need to contain, in addition to the interpreted texts, an introduction to the chosen theme, an editorial justifying the choices of the texts and their relation to the theme, and finally, a general conclusion obtained after the project's completion.
Students should work in teams, discussing ideas, providing feedback, and cooperating to achieve the best possible interpretation of the text.
Required Materials
- Computer with internet access: for research, magazine creation, and report writing.
- Various texts: The texts can be from any reliable source, such as books, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, websites of renowned institutions, etc.
- Blog or website creation platform: such as WordPress, Wix, Blogger, among others.
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Theme Selection: Each group will choose a theme of their interest that will guide the choice of texts and the creation of the digital magazine.
- Text Search: With the theme in hand, each group will select at least five texts of different types to analyze and interpret.
- Reading and Discussion of Texts: Each group member will individually read the texts and write down their interpretations and thoughts. Then, the group will hold meetings (online or in person) to discuss and consolidate the interpretations of each text.
- Creation of the Digital Magazine: Based on the consolidated interpretations, the group will create a digital magazine containing the interpreted texts and also an introduction to the chosen theme, an editorial explaining the choices made, and a general conclusion of the project.
- Final Report: Each group will prepare a report describing the project's implementation process, the objectives achieved, the difficulties encountered, the learnings, and the conclusions drawn.
Project Deliverables
Each group must deliver a link to the digital magazine, along with a written report that will complement the practical activity. The report should be structured in the following topics:
Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen theme and its relevance, as well as the objective of the digital magazine.
Development: Detailed description of the methodology used, from the choice of texts to the magazine creation. Additionally, the theory behind the project's central themes should be explained.
Conclusions: Reflections on the project, learnings and difficulties, as well as final comments on the process.
Bibliography: List of all interpreted texts, as well as the research sources used for the project implementation.
The workload for the project is over 12 hours per student and the deadline for delivery will be three weeks after the start date.
