Introduction

Coordinated sentences are an essential theme for understanding the Portuguese language and one of the fundamental structural elements of the language's syntax. They represent a concatenation of two or more sentences that, in the same period, have the same syntactic importance. That is, none of them is dependent on the other and each one could be alone, in a simple period, without any kind of prejudice to its understanding.

There are two types of Coordinated Sentences: Syndectic Coordinated Sentences and Asyndetic Coordinated Sentences. Syndectic Coordinated Sentences are those that are introduced by a coordinating conjunction, such as "but", "because", "and" among others. Asyndetic Coordinated Sentences, on the other hand, are those that do not have a coordinating conjunction, but still have the same meaning.

Syndectic Coordinated Sentences are further subdivided into: Additive, Adversative, Alternative, Conclusive and Explanatory, each one introduced by a specific type of coordinating conjunction and indicating a different semantic relationship between the sentences in the period.

Contextualization

Coordinated sentences are much more than just a topic of formal study of the Portuguese language. They are key components of verbal and written communication, and a solid and practical understanding of this topic can help improve communication skills, logical reasoning and even argumentation.

In the real world, Coordinated Sentences are used in various contexts, such as in writing journalistic texts, writing scripts for plays, screenplays for films and television programs, preparing political speeches, debates, and even in informal everyday conversations. Knowing how and when to use each type of coordinated sentence can sometimes determine the effectiveness of communication and the persuasiveness of the speech.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Theater of Coordinated Sentences

Project Objective

To provide students with a playful and interactive way of studying and understanding Coordinated Sentences, through the creation and staging of a play.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will create a play whose script should be based on dialogues involving the use of coordinated sentences. The aim is to get students to explore all the subclasses of syndectic coordinated sentences (additive, adversative, alternative, conclusive and explanatory) and asyndetic coordinated sentences in their dialogues.

Students should work in groups of 3 to 5 people. The duration of the project is one week.

Required Materials

1. Computer with internet access
2. Paper and pen
3. Camera, it can be the cell phone's, to record the play
4. Video editing program (optional)

Step by step

1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 members.
2. Do a research, using the suggested resources or others of your choice, to learn more about the theme "Coordinated Sentences".
3. Discuss with your group and choose a theme for the play that allows the exploration of different types of coordinated sentences.
4. Write the script of the play, marking with different colors each type of coordinated sentence that was used.
5. Rehearse and stage the play.
6. Record the play and edit the video (optional).
7. Write a report following the guidelines below.

Report

Based on the activity carried out, prepare a report with the following sections:

1. Introduction: Contextualization on the importance of Coordinated Sentences; brief description of the project and its objectives.
2. Development: Explain the theory about Coordinated Sentences and how you used this knowledge in the development of the theatrical script. Indicate the methodology used to develop the work and present the script written by the group, highlighting the different types of coordinated sentences used.
3. Conclusions: Review the project objectives and discuss the results obtained, the difficulties encountered, how you overcame these difficulties and what lessons you could learn from this project. Also discuss the effectiveness of the script you created in using Coordinated Sentences.
4. Bibliography: Inform the bibliographic references used by the group.

The report will be evaluated both for the quality of the theoretical and practical discussion on Coordinated Sentences, and for the clarity, cohesion and grammatical correctness of the text produced.
