Breaking with past traditions, they embraced experimentation, focusing on abstraction, originality, and subjectivity.

In the Brazilian context, Modernism was a reaction against European aesthetics and the imitation of its trends, seeking to assert its own cultural identity. It was a movement that aimed to break down barriers between different art forms and used colloquial language to bring art closer to the public.

Modernism emphasizes the expression of individuality and the interpretation of reality, allowing for a broad spectrum of styles and approaches. However, two key concepts are crucial to understanding this movement: the rupture with tradition and the idea that art should reflect the modern experience.

Modernism is crucial for understanding the artistic and cultural changes of the early 20th century. This period saw unprecedented growth in technological innovations, urbanization, and consumerism, transformations that modernist artists sought to comprehend and express in their works.

Furthermore, this movement promoted the breaking of paradigms and the valorization of local culture and originality of expression, leading to a flourishing of artistic styles and techniques. Therefore, by studying Modernism, we are also exploring the cultural identity of a nation, its aspirations, and frustrations.

Practical Activity: A Journey Through Modernism

Project Objective

The main objective of this activity is to provide students with a practical and engaging experience with Modernism, allowing them to explore and analyze its characteristics, its main artists, and works.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of three to five members, and each group will be responsible for researching and presenting an analysis of a specific Modernist artwork, selected by the teacher, creating a 'Virtual Modernist Museum'.

The groups will have to study in-depth the assigned artwork, analyzing its historical context, the artist's style, the technique used, and the message the artist wanted to convey. Subsequently, they should create a reproduction of the chosen artwork using the materials they prefer.

The groups will also have the challenge of producing a 10 to 15-minute video, presenting their analysis and explaining the creative process behind their reproduction. This video will be part of the 'Virtual Modernist Museum' exhibition.

Required Materials

1. Books and websites for research.
2. Materials for the reproduction of the artwork (paints, brushes, paper, fabric, clay, etc.).
3. Camera or smartphone for filming and editing the video.

Step by Step

1. Research and Analysis (5 hours): Each group must conduct in-depth research on the assigned artwork. They need to understand the context in which the artwork was produced, the artist's style, the technique used, and the message or emotion the artist wanted to convey.

2. Creation of the Reproduction (3 hours): The students must then recreate the artwork using the materials they prefer. It is important to remember that the goal is not to make a perfect copy, but to interpret the artwork and recreate it in their own way.

3. Video Production (2 hours): The groups must produce a 10 to 15-minute video explaining their analysis of the artwork and how they recreated the artwork. The video should be informative, but also creative and engaging.

Deliverables and Document Writing

At the end of the practical activity, each group must deliver:

1. Reproduction of the Artwork: The students must deliver their reproduction of the artwork.

2. Video: The video produced by the students, containing the presentation of their analysis and explanation of the creative process.

3. Report: The report should include:

   • Introduction: Students must introduce the topic, explain the relevance of Modernism in the art world, and the importance of teamwork for project execution.

   • Development: It should include a detailed analysis of the chosen artwork and an explanation of the methodology used for the reproduction. Additionally, they should discuss the video production and the results obtained.

   • Conclusion: Students must reflect on what they learned during the project, the skills they acquired, and the conclusions they were able to draw from the study of Modernism and the recreation of the artwork.

   • Bibliography: Students must list all research sources used for the project.

Deadline

The project has one month to be completed, including research, creation of the reproduction, video production, and report writing.
