In the Brazilian context, we can observe this characteristic in the works of bossa nova artists, in the 'cinema novo', in cartoons, graffiti, and in many literary works, which express direct or indirect criticisms of the political and social system.

Therefore, understanding art as a form of social criticism is fundamental for a full understanding of our history and culture. Art, in this sense, becomes a powerful tool to provoke reflections, questions, and, perhaps, encourage transformations.

Importance of the Theme

Art as social criticism allows us to explore and analyze social problems from a new perspective. The artist, by using their sensitivity and creativity to express their feelings about social situations, brings to light situations that are often ignored or minimized. This allows the public to have a greater understanding and empathy for the social issues addressed.

Furthermore, this critical nature of art allows for the formation of a sharper awareness of the struggles, injustices, inequalities, and oppressions that permeate society. Art has the power to emotionally connect us to these issues, moving our feelings towards action and change.

Activity Title: Art in Criticism - Intersectional Connections

Project Objective

Students will explore, through the development of an artistic production, the theme 'Art as social criticism'. The project aims to help students understand the influence of art on social criticism, recognizing it as a tool to express social, political, and cultural issues. Additionally, the project aims to develop students' ability to work collaboratively and enhance their research and communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be responsible for choosing a relevant social issue to be explored. They must then create a form of art (it can be a painting, a sculpture, a song, a poem, a short film, an art installation, etc.) that represents the chosen social criticism. It is important that the work is original, that is, created by the students themselves, and not a reproduction of an existing one.

Necessary Materials

The necessary materials vary according to the form of art chosen by the group. Items such as paper, pens, paints, clay, musical instruments, camera, editing software, among others, may be necessary.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

1. Group Formation: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 members.

2. Choice of Social Issue: Each group chooses a relevant social issue that will be represented through art.

3. Thematic Research: Students must thoroughly research the chosen social issue. Understand its origin, its implications in society, the sides of the issue, supporting and opposing arguments, and how it affects people's lives.

4. Choice of Art Form: After the research, the group must choose the art form that will be used to represent the criticism.

5. Creation of the Artwork: The artwork must be original and represent the chosen social issue. During this stage, students must dedicate themselves to the production of the work.

6. Writing the Document: Parallel to the production of the artwork, students must write the project document. The document should include:

   • Introduction: contextualization of the social issue, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the project and artwork's objectives;
   • Development: detailed explanation of the research process, choice of art form, methodology used for creating the artwork, and discussion of the results obtained;
   • Conclusion: recap of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project;
   • Bibliography: indication of the research sources used for the project.

7. Artwork Presentation: Each group must present their artwork to the class, explaining the concept behind it and how it represents the chosen social criticism.

The project deliverables include the artwork created by the group and the written document, which must be submitted digitally to the teacher. During the artwork presentation, the group must explain the concept behind the artwork and how it represents the chosen social criticism.
