Contextualization

Art has many facets that permeate and intertwine, and one of these facets is social critique. As an expression of the human being, it reflects the society of its time, bringing up relevant issues that are often problematic and that need to be discussed. In this way, it works as a mirror that reveals our reality in unexpected ways and stimulates reflections.

The modernist movement, for example, was marked by the social criticism in the arts. Artists, through their work, rebelled against the established system, exposing the socioeconomic, political, and cultural issues that were present at the time. They used art as a weapon to show their feelings and seek social changes.

In the Brazilian context, the cannibal movement, led by Oswald de Andrade and Tarsila do Amaral, defied the established notions of national identity and criticized the blind adoption of European cultural trends. Tarsila's "Abaporu" painting is an example of a work of art that carries in its essence a social critique.

Art as a social critique is very much alive today, with contemporary artists using different media to express their worries and questions about the present time. An example is graffiti, which uses urban spaces to communicate messages of resistance, rebellion, and hope, among others.

The role of art in social criticism is extremely important since it shows that art is not pure aesthetics, but also a vehicle for questions and changes. This project will explore the power of art as a tool of social criticism, providing a space for reflections and debates.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "ArteExpressa: Exposing Society"

Project Objective:

To develop a visual artwork (painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, or performance) that reflects a social issue chosen by the students. The artwork will be accompanied by a written report giving details of the creative process and the social concepts covered.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of 3-5 students will work together to identify a social issue that they feel is important. Once the theme is chosen, they must research the topic, analyze different perspectives, and think about how it can be artistically expressed.

Next, they must plan and create an artwork that represents this social issue. They can choose any artistic medium they prefer that they feel will most effectively communicate their message: painting, sculpture, photography, video, or performance. The artwork must be original and reflect the collective effort of the group.

The final step will be to prepare a written report detailing the creative process. The report must discuss the chosen social issue, the research carried out, the selected artistic medium, and the significance of the artwork they created.

Necessary Materials:

• Artistic materials chosen by the group (paints, brushes, camera, video editing software, etc.).
• Computer or notebook with internet access for research.

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity:

1. Form groups of 3-5 students.
2. Choose a social issue to explore and research it.
3. Discuss in a group how this issue can be represented artistically.
4. Choose the artistic medium that the group believes best represents the chosen issue.
5. Develop the concept of the artwork and start creating.
6. Complete the artwork within the established timeframe.
7. Prepare a written report giving details of the theme selection process, the artwork creation, and the analysis of the chosen social issue.

Project and Document Submission:

The final product of this project consists of two parts:

1. The artwork created by the group. Each group must present their artwork to the class and explain the meaning and intention behind it.

2. The written report. This must include, at the very least, four main sections: Introduction (contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application, the objective of the project), Development (the theory behind the theme, the detailed description of the activity, the methodology used, the presentation, and discussion of the results), Conclusions (review of the main points, lessons learned, conclusions about the project), and Bibliography (the sources consulted during the development of the project). Moreover, the report must give details of the creative process of the artwork, the decisions taken during the creation, and how the artwork represents the chosen social critique.
