Context
Evolution is the process that produces changes in the hereditary characteristics of species over time. Studying this process, which takes us from the origins of life on Earth to the diversity of species we see today, is one of the pillars of Biology, and is essential to understanding how the living world works and how it has changed.
The theory of Evolution, as proposed by Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, is based on two main ideas: genetic variation and natural selection. The first states that individuals of a species have genetic differences among themselves, while the second proposes that nature "selects" those that are better adapted to the environment they live in, increasing their chances of survival and reproduction.
Through the study of evolution, we can understand the complexity and diversity of life on Earth, as well as the interconnection of all living organisms. Knowledge about evolution is fundamental not only to biology, but also to many other areas, such as medicine, agriculture, ecology, and even psychology.
Evolution also has very important implications for our everyday lives. Understanding how species evolve allows us, for example, to predict the response of pathogenic organisms to drugs and create more effective strategies for pest and disease control. In addition, understanding evolutionary processes contributes to the valuation and conservation of biodiversity, an essential resource for human survival.
The development and improvement of scientific knowledge occurs through research. With that in mind, we are going to carry out a project where you will have the opportunity to investigate some aspects of evolution. Throughout this work, we expect you to better understand evolution and its implications, as well as to develop skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and scientific communication.
Practical Activity: "Evolving with Birds - A Journey into Adaptation"
Project Objective
The main objective of this project is to allow students to learn about evolution and natural selection through a practical experiment involving birds (or bird models) and different types of simulated "food" and "environments". Students will also learn about the importance of adaptation for the survival and perpetuation of species.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and each group will be challenged to become a "bird species". Each "bird" will be assigned a different type of "beak" (e.g. tweezers, spoon, chopsticks, etc.). The types of "food" (e.g. grains of different sizes, rubber fruit, etc.) will be scattered in different "environments" (e.g. shallow dish, tall jar, cardboard box with holes, etc.).
The task of the "birds" will be to collect as much food as possible in a given period of time. Throughout the experiment, the environments and the availability of food will be altered, simulating the changes in environmental conditions that occur over time.
Each group will have to plan and implement a strategy, adapting to changes in the environment to maximize their food collection. Species that fail to adapt and collect enough food will "die", while the more successful ones will be able to "reproduce" (i.e. continue in the game).

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for Carrying out the Activity
- The teacher will provide the context, discussing the key concepts of evolution and natural selection.
- Students will be divided into groups and given their "bird species". Each group will be equipped with a type of "beak".
- The groups will try to collect "food" from different "environments", using their "beaks". During each "feeding station", students will record the number of "food" items collected.
- At each new "feeding station", the teacher will modify the type and availability of food and the configuration of the environment.
- The "bird species" that fail to collect enough food will "die", while the more successful ones will be able to "reproduce".
- The experiment will continue until only the most adaptable species remain.
- After the activity, students should discuss the results and document them to write the final report.
