Substances that donate hydrogen ions are considered acidic (pH less than 7), those that receive them are considered basic (pH greater than 7), and those that have no tendency to donate or receive are said to be neutral (pH equal to 7).

It is essential to understand that acidity and basicity are not absolute properties, but vary depending on the medium in which the substance is placed. Water, for example, is considered neutral under normal conditions of temperature and pressure, but it can behave as acidic or basic under certain conditions.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to facilitate the understanding of the concepts of acidity and basicity through the performance of practical experiments and analysis of results. Students will evaluate the pH of different common solutions in daily life and classify these solutions as acidic, neutral, or basic. Additionally, they will also analyze how these substances interact in our daily lives.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will have one month to complete the project. Each group must select 10 household products or solutions (beverages, cleaning products, foods, etc.) and measure their pH using pH strips to determine if they are acidic, neutral, or basic. Students should record their observations and results in an organized and detailed manner for the preparation of the final report.

Required Materials

  1. 10 everyday use solutions.
  2. pH strips (must be purchased or requested from the school).
  3. Gloves, safety goggles, and apron for student safety during the handling of certain solutions.
  4. 10 transparent cups to place the solutions.
  5. Camera or cell phone to record the process and results.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Selection of products or solutions: The group must select 10 different types of everyday use products. You can choose between foods, cleaning products, medicines, etc.

  2. Organization for the experiment: Students must organize a suitable space for the experiment, ensuring that everyone has visibility and can participate in the process.

  3. pH measurement: Place each solution in a transparent cup and wet the pH strip in the solution. Compare the color the strip acquired with the color scale provided on the pH strips packaging to determine the pH value.

  4. Recording of results: Students must write down the pH value of each solution and classify it as acidic, neutral, or basic.

  5. Discussion of results: Each group must discuss the results and analyze if there is a correlation between the acidity or basicity of a substance and its daily use.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, students must produce a research report, with the following sections:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students must present an overview of acidity and basicity, explain the relevance of the topic, and contextualize the practical activity within the scope of the topic. Students are expected to mention the materials selected for the experiment and why they were chosen.

  2. Development: Here, students must describe in detail the activity carried out, explaining the step-by-step of the experiment and discussing the theory that supports the findings.
