Properties of Organic Compounds: Acidity and Basicity

Introduction

Our world is composed of endless chemical reactions and phenomena that occur daily without us even realizing it. One of these phenomena is acidity and basicity, two important properties of chemical compounds that have a direct impact on our lives. To understand the basic principles of acidity and basicity, we need to start with the understanding of the concepts of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-).

An acid is a substance that, when dissolved in water, produces hydrogen ions, making the medium acidic. The most common and familiar acid is hydrochloric acid (HCl) found in gastric juice. Bases, on the other hand, produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in water, making the medium basic or alkaline. A common example of a base is sodium hydroxide (NaOH), which is used in many detergents and soaps.

Acids and bases neutralize each other when they react. This process is known as neutralization. A neutralization reaction produces salt and water, and this is how antacids relieve heartburn by neutralizing the excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Context

Acids and bases are everywhere, from the lemon juice we put on our salads, which contains citric acid, to the baking soda we use to make bread and cakes rise, which is a base. Even our bodies use acids and bases to function. For example, our stomach produces hydrochloric acid to help digest food, while our pancreas produces bases to neutralize this acid and protect our intestines.

Acidity and basicity are also fundamental in the industry. The pharmaceutical industry relies on the manipulation of acids and bases to create effective medications. The food industry also uses acids and bases, either to preserve food or to moderate taste. And we cannot forget the importance of acids and bases in the environmental field, for example, in water quality analysis, where pH (a measure of acidity or basicity) is a crucial indicator.

Studying acidity and basicity is not only essential to understand the world around us, but it can also open many doors in the fields of science, health, environment, and industry.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Acids or Bases: Building the World with Chemistry!"

Project Objective

This project aims to lead students to identify everyday materials that are acids or bases, explore their properties, and apply them in a practical context.

Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students must identify and collect at least five substances from everyday life that are acidic and five that are basic. The students must then conduct simple experiments to confirm whether their choices are indeed acidic or basic. Finally, the students must present a detailed report on their findings and experiments, composing the four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

The project should be carried out over a week, and considering the various tasks involved, it is estimated that each student can expect to dedicate between two and four hours to its completion.

Required Materials

  1. Everyday substances classified as acidic and basic.
  2. pH indicator (can be made at home using red cabbage).
  3. Protective gloves.
  4. Safety goggles.
  5. Paper and pencil for notes.

Step by Step

  1. Form groups and start discussing and identifying acidic and basic substances you know from everyday life. Make a list of possible substances for testing.

  2. Collect samples of these substances. Remember: safety comes first! Use protective equipment and handle the substances you collected with care.

  3. Using a pH indicator, test each substance to determine if it is acidic or basic. Record the results.

  4. Discuss the results as a group. For each substance, research and discuss the reasons why it is acidic or basic and how it is used in everyday life.

  5. Create the project report, detailing your findings and experiments.

Project Submission

Students must submit a well-structured report containing the following parts:

  1. Introduction: Describe the context of acidity and basicity in everyday life, the relevance and application of the theme, and the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Present the theory on acidity and basicity, explain the activity carried out in detail, present the methodology used, and finally, present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Discuss what you learned from the project and what were the main conclusions you drew from it.

  4. Bibliography: Cite the sources you used to develop the project.

During the execution of this project, students should work collaboratively, distribute tasks, debate ideas, and come to conclusions together. The final report should be a reflection of this collaborative process, and all group members should be involved in its preparation.
