Practical Activity – 'The Magic of Substitution Reactions'

Project Objective

With the aim of providing a practical experience and illustrating the theoretical concept of substitution reactions, this project requires students to work together to perform one or more substitution reactions in a controlled and safe environment. Additionally, students are required to prepare a detailed report describing the process and the results.

Project Description

Groups, composed of 3 to 5 students, will be challenged to carry out a substitution reaction and monitor its results. In addition to the practical part, students will have to prepare a report with the sections of introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

Necessary Materials

  1. Appropriate reagents for the chosen substitution reaction.
  2. Safety equipment (gloves, goggles, and apron).
  3. Laboratory equipment (test tubes, beakers, pipettes, among others).
  4. Camera or smartphone to document the experience.

Activity Step-by-Step

  1. Theoretical Study: Before embarking on the practical task, students must review the theory of substitution reactions and catalysts. Each group member should contribute by bringing relevant points from the study.

  2. Reaction Planning: Choose a substitution reaction that is appropriate, safe, and feasible to be performed in the school laboratory. The planning should include all steps of the reaction, the necessary reagents, and the function of the catalyst.

  3. Reaction Execution: Under adult supervision, students must carry out the substitution reaction and document the entire process. This documentation may include photos or videos of the experiment in progress, as well as notes on the students' observations.

  4. Report Elaboration: Based on the practical experience and theoretical study, each group must prepare a comprehensive report (as mentioned earlier). This should be divided into:

    a. Introduction: Contextualize the topic, its relevance, and real-world application. Present the project's objective, the reaction planning, and the result prediction.

    b. Development: Explain the theory of substitution reactions and the reaction chosen for the project, detail the practical execution in the laboratory, present the results obtained, and discuss these results.

    c. Conclusion: Review the main points, reflect on the lessons learned, express the conclusions and final observations on the reaction and the project in general.

    d. Bibliography: Indicate the sources on which the group relied to work on the project.

  5. Project Presentation: Each group must present their experience and findings to the class, using the report and the documentation of the experience to facilitate the presentation.

This project aims to achieve two main objectives: strengthen students' understanding of substitution reactions and develop important socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork, time management, proactivity, and communication.

The total duration of the project should be one week, allowing students to carefully develop the action plan, conduct the experiment, and build the report without haste.
