Alcohols are a group of organic compounds that contain one or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) directly bonded to saturated carbon atoms. They fall under the family of chemical compounds called functional organic compounds, which are organic compounds that contain a specific chemical function.

Alcohols are one of the most common classes of organic compounds found in nature. They are used in a variety of daily consumer products and in various industries and applications, including the production of plastics, solvents, and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, alcohol is a key ingredient in alcoholic beverages, making it relevant in both scientific and social contexts.

Introduction

Alcohol is a chemical compound that is present in various areas of our lives, from ethanol in our cars to the beer we consume. However, despite its wide use, alcohol can be dangerous and even fatal if mismanaged or consumed in excess.

Alcohol can be produced through fermentation, a process in which sugar is converted into ethanol by the action of yeasts. Ethanol, in particular, is a type of alcohol that is often used as a solvent, in the production of alcoholic beverages, and as fuel.

Alcohols can be classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary, depending on the number of carbon atoms bonded to the carbon atom that has the bond with the hydroxyl group.

The effects of alcohol on the human body range from euphoric to depressive, depending on factors such as the amount consumed, the frequency of consumption, and the overall health status of the consumer.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Alcohol Effects: A Research and Practical Experiment

Project Objectives:

  1. Understand the structure and properties of alcohols, focusing on ethanol.
  2. Investigate alcohol production through the fermentation process.
  3. Explore the effects of alcohol consumption on the human body and society.
  4. Apply research, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

Detailed Description:

The activity consists of two main parts. The first is a detailed online research on alcohol (focusing on ethanol), its production, and its effects. The second part is the practical fermentation experiment. The ideal group size for the project is 3 to 5 people. The total project duration should range from five to ten hours per student.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Notebook and pen for notes.
  • Natural grape or apple juice (unpasteurized).
  • Sugar.
  • Dry yeast.
  • Balloons.
  • Glass bottles with caps (juice bottle type).
  • Thermometer.

The materials for the fermentation experiment can be easily found in supermarkets and natural product stores.

Step by Step:

Part 1 - Research

  1. Conduct a detailed online research on alcohol (focusing on ethanol), its production, effects, and risks associated with consumption.
  2. Identify and note the chemical processes involved in alcohol production and how it is metabolized by our body.
  3. Collect statistical data on alcohol consumption and its impacts on society.

Part 2 - Practical Experiment

  1. Pour the juice into one of the glass bottles until it fills about 3/4 of the bottle's capacity.
  2. Add about two tablespoons of sugar and mix well.
  3. Dissolve a teaspoon of yeast in a little warm water. Add this mixture to the juice bottle.
  4. Place a balloon on the bottle cap and close it tightly.
  5. Repeat the process for each juice bottle you have.
  6. Leave the bottles in a dark place at a constant temperature (around 20-22 degrees Celsius) for about a week.
  7. Observe the formation of bubbles in the balloon, indicating gas release during fermentation.
  8. After a week, open the cap and measure the alcohol content of the fermented juice using a thermometer.

Part 3 - Report After completing the research and experiment, students should compile all information and results into a report. The report should include:

  1. Introduction: Description of the topic, its relevance, project objectives, and a brief description of the experiment.
  2. Development: Theory on alcohol, its production and effects, experiment details, methodology used, and discussion of results.
  3. Conclusion: Reflections on the experiment results, learnings, exploration of alcohol impacts on society and human health, and possible solutions to reduce harm.
  4. Bibliography: Sources used in the research.
