Theoretical Introduction
Organic Chemistry is the area of chemistry dedicated to the study of carbon compounds, and within this vast class of substances, alcohols stand out. These compounds have one or more hydroxyl (OH) groups directly linked to saturated carbon atoms in their structure.
Alcohols can also be classified according to the position of the hydroxyl group in the carbon chain. If the hydroxyl group is linked to a primary carbon, we have a primary alcohol; if it is linked to a secondary carbon, it is a secondary alcohol; and if it is linked to a tertiary carbon, it is a tertiary alcohol. The reactivity principle of alcohols is related to the fact that oxygen is an electronegative atom and, therefore, attracts the electrons from the hydrogen in the hydroxyl group, forming a pair of non-bonding electrons.
Alcohols present several important characteristics, including solubility in water, boiling point, and acidity. Solubility is influenced by the size of the carbon chain and the number of hydroxyl groups present. Boiling point is influenced by the type of bond, molecular mass, and the presence of hydroxyl groups. The acidity of an alcohol is related to the stability of the ion that remains when the hydrogen from the hydroxyl group is donated as a proton.
Contextualization and Importance
Alcohols are substances widely present in our daily lives and play fundamental roles in various areas. In the pharmaceutical industry, for example, they are used in medications and antiseptics. In the food industry, they are used as preservatives. They are also found in cleaning products, paints, and solvents. Furthermore, alcohol is widely known for its use as fuel in automobiles, being an interesting alternative to fossil fuels.
However, the misuse of alcohols, especially ethanol found in alcoholic beverages, can lead to serious health consequences, such as liver diseases, damage to the nervous system, chemical dependency, and even death. Therefore, the study of alcohols is not only relevant for understanding various chemical reactions but also has important social aspects, addressing the impact of alcohol consumption on society.
Practical Activity
Title: Alcohols: From Theory to Practice - Analysis and Applications
Project Objective
This project aims to research, analyze, and discuss both the theoretical part (structure, reactivity, properties, and characteristics of alcohols) and the practical applications of alcohols in daily life, industry, and society, including their benefits and risks.
Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be responsible for preparing a comprehensive report on the proposed topic, as well as preparing and presenting an expository lesson to the class, demonstrating both the theoretical part and the practical applications of alcohols.
In addition, each group will need to conduct a small experiment demonstrating some aspect of alcohols (such as solubility, boiling point, or acidity) or some of their industrial or everyday applications.

- Various materials for the practical experiment, depending on what the group chooses to demonstrate.
Step by Step
Part 1 - Research and Theoretical Lesson

Research: Each group should search for reliable sources to study the theory of alcohols, their properties, characteristics, and reactivity. Remember to take note of all sources used for later reference!

Theoretical Lesson: Based on the research conducted, the group should prepare a 20 to 30-minute presentation for the class, covering the theoretical concepts of alcohols.
Part 2 - Applications Research and Practical Lesson

Applications Research: Now, the group should research the various applications of alcohols in daily life, industry, and society, including the associated benefits and risks.

Experiment Selection: Each group will choose a small experiment to demonstrate some aspect or application of alcohols. This experiment should be safe and possible to be conducted in the classroom or at home, with supervision. Research experiments and consult with the teacher before deciding!

Practical Lesson: On the day of the practical lesson, the group will present the chosen experiment to the class, explaining what it represents and how it relates to what was learned about alcohols.
Part 3 - Report
- Report Writing: Finally, each group must write a comprehensive report on the project, following the guidelines provided earlier. This report should be submitted in digital format and also presented and defended before the class.
Project Deliverables
- Theoretical lesson on alcohols (in person or recorded).
- Practical lesson with experiment demonstration (in person or recorded).
- Complete project report, including introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography. The development should explain the theory of alcohols, the methodology used in the research and lesson preparation, the choice and execution of the experiment, and the analysis of the results obtained. The conclusions should summarize the project's learnings, both theoretical and practical, and the relevance of this knowledge to real life. The bibliography should list all sources used during the project.
Students should plan and divide all tasks among group members, managing time and available resources efficiently. Teamwork is crucial for the project's success, so communication, collaboration, and problem-solving will be essential skills to practice.
