Organic Functions: Aldehyde Nomenclature

Context

Aldehydes are organic compounds characterized by the presence of the functional group -CHO, also known as the formyl group. This functional group consists of a carbon atom bonded to a hydrogen atom and a double bond with an oxygen atom. Aldehydes play an essential role in many chemical and biological processes, and understanding the nomenclature associated with them is fundamental for any chemistry student.

To understand the names of aldehydes, we first need to understand the concept of the 'main chain.' In organic chemistry, the main chain of a compound is the longest chain of carbon atoms. In the case of aldehydes, the aldehyde group is always located at the end of the main chain, which means it will always occupy position 1 in the chain. In terms of nomenclature, aldehydes are named based on the number of carbon atoms in the main chain, with the addition of the suffix -al at the end.

The nomenclature of aldehydes allows us to identify and communicate about these compounds clearly and precisely. However, more than just a language we use to describe chemistry, nomenclature reflects our understanding of how aldehydes are structured and how they behave. Understanding the nomenclature of aldehydes is therefore an essential part of a broader understanding of organic chemistry.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Aldehyde Nomenclature Game

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to offer students a playful and interactive way to learn aldehyde nomenclature. Upon completion of the project, participants should be able to correctly name aldehydes from their structures and identify the structure from the names.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students, with an estimated execution time of five to ten hours per student. The project involves creating a card game involving aldehyde nomenclature. Each card in the game will have the name of an aldehyde on one side and its structure on the opposite side.

Students will select a list of 50 aldehydes from reliable sources of organic chemistry to be used in the card game. Each student will be responsible for drawing the structure of 10 aldehydes on cards, with their respective names on the back.

Once the cards are ready, students will play the game with each other. The game can be played in various ways, for example, one student can show the name side to the other players, and whoever correctly identifies the structure wins the card, or vice versa. The game ends when all cards have been played, and the winner is the one with the most cards.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or sturdier paper than regular paper.
  • Colored pens or markers.
  • Computer with internet access.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should select a list of 50 aldehydes from reliable sources of organic chemistry.
  3. Each student will draw the structure of 10 aldehydes on cards, with their respective names on the back.
  4. The entire group must review and validate the final list of aldehydes and their structures.
  5. Once completed, shuffle the cards and start the game.
  6. At the end of the game, write a document with the structure of the previously described report.

At the end of the project, the group must deliver the set of created cards and a detailed report on the process. The report should include:

  1. Introduction: Description of the topic, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.
  2. Development: Explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, aldehyde nomenclature, and explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explicitly stating the learnings and reflections on the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be written clearly and objectively, demonstrating the students' understanding of the topic and the application of this knowledge in the practical activity. The connection between the theoretical and practical parts and the evolution of knowledge throughout the project should be evident.
