Context

Amides, in the universe of Organic Chemistry, are compounds of great importance and quite interesting, originating from the substitution of one or more hydrogens of ammonia (NH3) by carbonyl groups (R-CO). They are characterized by the presence of the functional group -CONH2 and are widely used in various industries, such as textile, polymers, and pharmaceuticals.

The nomenclature of such compounds follows rules from IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and is a key point for the understanding and study of amides. It is this nomenclature that determines how compounds are named, organized, and identified, helping scientists and students from around the world to communicate efficiently and accurately.

Although organic chemistry may seem complex and even daunting, studying amides and their nomenclature is a fantastic way to demystify and understand this universe. Furthermore, some amides are present in our own bodies, acting in fundamental biological processes. Urea, for example, is an amide that our body produces to eliminate excess nitrogen. Understanding amides and how we name and structure these molecules can give us a new perspective on the functioning of our own biology.

Activity Title: "Amides: Unraveling the Nomenclature"

Project Objective

Explore the nomenclature of amides, understand how it is structured, and apply it in naming real and fictional compounds, developing a catalog of amides and their applications, as well as presenting a didactic exhibition to the class.

Detailed Project Description and Necessary Materials

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for one month. Each group will be responsible for developing a catalog of amides, where each member will be responsible for a section of the catalog.

The catalog should be divided into the following sections:

  1. Simple Amides: Compounds with only one amide in the functional group.
  2. Complex Amides: Compounds with multiple amides as the functional group.
  3. Amides in Medicines: Examples of medicines containing amides in their chemical structures.
  4. Amides in Industry: Examples of industrial applications of amides.

For each section, students should research examples of compounds, their structures and functions, and how their nomenclature is done. They should also include images and diagrams to make the catalog visually appealing and informative.

Materials needed:

  1. Organic Chemistry books (for reference and research).
  2. Internet access (for advanced research and information verification).
  3. Editing programs (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or similar) for creating the catalog.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation and Task Division: Students should form groups of 3 to 5 members, and each member will be responsible for a section of the catalog.

  2. Research and Information Collection: Each student should research amides related to their section, collect data on name, structure, function, and application.

  3. Writing the Catalog: Students should write their sections in the form of informative text, including all collected information. They should also include images, diagrams, and, if possible, examples of where the amide can be found or how it is used.

  4. Review and Assembly of the Final Catalog: Once all sections are ready, students should put them together to form the final catalog. They should also review all material to ensure its correctness and cohesion.

  5. Presentation: Each group should prepare an exhibition about the catalog, to present and explain the collected information to the class.

  6. Writing the Report: After completing the practical activity, students should write a report detailing the entire process of creating the catalog, from initial research to the final presentation. The report should follow the format indicated earlier: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, groups should deliver:

  1. The digital catalog of amides, containing the different sections and all collected information.
  2. A presentation about the work, explaining and discussing the main points of the catalog.
  3. A written report detailing the process of creating the catalog, from initial research, catalog formation, to the final presentation. The report should follow the following steps:
    • Introduction: Contextualize the nomenclature of amides and its relevance, as well as explain the project's objective.
    • Development: Describe the theory behind the nomenclature of amides, the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Recap the main points of the work, present the learnings obtained, and the final conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used in the work.

Students will be evaluated not only based on the content of the catalog and report but also on their ability to work in a team, manage time and resources, and communicate their findings.
