Organic Functions: Amine Nomenclature

Contextualization

Amines are organic chemical compounds that derive from ammonia (NH3) and play a role in various areas of life and science. Since Chemistry is intrinsically linked to everyday life, understanding the nomenclature and characteristics of amines is fundamental.

Amines are responsible for many aromas and flavors that we recognize. Many medications, for example, have nitrogenous compounds in their structure, such as amines. In addition, amines play an essential role in biological processes, such as protein synthesis.

Organic Chemistry, which studies carbon compounds, has its own language. It is an alphabet of symbols and terms with specific meanings. In this case, the name 'amine' clarifies the presence of a functional group, a nitrogen atom connected to hydrogen or carbon substituents. Therefore, learning to name and recognize them, not only in an isolated molecule but within larger structures, is part of the chemistry student's journey.

Introduction

The nomenclature of amines is based on the number of hydrogen atoms that have been substituted in the ammonia molecule. Thus, amines can be classified as primary, secondary, and tertiary. This is the first layer of understanding, but amines can still be aromatic or aliphatic, cyclic or acyclic.

In our chemical universe, amines are essential substances. In the human body, biogenic amines perform important functions as neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and adrenaline. In organic synthesis, amines are used as intermediates in the production of dyes, resins, detergents, and medications.

In this project, we will seek to thoroughly understand the structure of amines, the nomenclature process, and their importance in the world around us. With a practical and theoretical methodology, we will learn to name and classify amines, understand their properties, and recognize their presence in more complex compounds.

Practical Activity

Title: "Getting to Know the Amine Family - From Theory to Practice"

Objective

To understand the nomenclature and characteristics of amines, recognizing their application and relevance in different contexts, from the chemical industry to our health.

Project Description

This project consists of a series of activities that aim to explore key topics about amines and their nomenclatures. We will start with a theoretical research, followed by a practical modeling activity, the development of an educational game, and finally the preparation of a presentation for the class.

Each stage of this project requires approximately three hours to be completed. Therefore, the project as a whole should take more than twelve hours to finish.

Groups should consist of 3 to 5 students, promoting collaboration and teamwork.

Necessary Materials

  • Books and internet access for study and research.
  • Molecular modeling kit or alternatively, modeling clay.
  • Materials for game development (paper, scissors, markers, etc).
  • Computer for creating the presentation in slides.

Step by Step

  1. Theoretical Research: Initially, each group must conduct a detailed research on the nomenclature of amines. In addition to understanding the nomenclature rules, it is important to identify examples of amines in the industry, medications, and in our organism. Each group member can be responsible for a research area to later share their findings with the rest of the group.

  2. Molecular Modeling: In the second stage, students must use a molecular modeling kit to represent different amines. If it is not possible to have access to a molecular modeling kit, students can use modeling clay to create molecules. The goal is to have a deeper understanding of the structure of amines and their nomenclature.

  3. Game Development: Based on the acquired knowledge, students must create a game that can convey and test the understanding of amine nomenclature. The game can be a quiz, memory game, board game, etc. The important thing is that it addresses key topics and includes practical examples.

  4. Presentation: Finally, each group must prepare a PowerPoint or equivalent presentation that includes an explanation of amine nomenclature, the presentation of their educational game, and a practical example of the importance of amines. It is important that the presentation has a logical sequence and that all key concepts are discussed.

After completing all stages, groups must produce a detailed project report. This report should follow the format of a scientific report, including:

  • Introduction: In this section, the group must contextualize the theme, explaining what amines are and why nomenclature is important. It should also explain the relevance of amines to the industry, medicine, and biology.

  • Development: Here, the group must explain all the work done, including theoretical research, molecular modeling, game development, and presentation. The methodology used in each phase and the results obtained should be clearly explained.

  • Conclusion: At this point, the group must synthesize the project's learnings, reporting the main challenges, discoveries, and conclusions.

  • Bibliography: Last but not least, the group must list all sources used to prepare the work.

The final delivery of this project will be the presentation, the educational game, and the written report. The combination of these three parts will ensure a complete and comprehensive understanding of the topic.
