Organic Functions: Amine Nomenclature

Context

Organic Chemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies carbon compounds, an element with the incredible ability to form a vast number of different molecules. Among these molecules, amines stand out, which are compounds derived from ammonia (NH3) and play a fundamental role in many chemical and biological processes.

Amines are compounds that have one or more hydrogen atoms from ammonia replaced by organic groups, which are carbon chains. They have the characteristic of being bases, meaning they can accept protons from other substances and, for this reason, are found in various products and processes relevant to human life.

Amines also have several practical applications in our daily lives. They are used in the production of medications, such as analgesics and anesthetics, polymers, and dyes. Furthermore, amines are of great biological importance, as they are part of the structure of many compounds present in living organisms, such as DNA, proteins, and some hormones.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Amines - A Dive into Nomenclature"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to become familiar with the nomenclature of amines, understand the properties and characteristics of these compounds, and their relevance in our lives.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for researching, studying, and delving into the topic of amines, with a special focus on nomenclature.

Group members should also look for amines in everyday products (medicines, food, cleaning products, etc.) and discuss the importance of these amines and their functions.

The final challenge will be to create an interactive educational game about the nomenclature of amines to allow other students to practice and learn in a dynamic and engaging way. The game can be a quiz, a memory game, a board game, among others. Be creative!

Groups will also have the task of preparing a detailed report on the nomenclature of amines, along with their exploration of examples of amines in daily life and the development of the game.

Required Materials

  1. Chemistry textbooks
  2. Internet access
  3. Paper, pencils, colored pens
  4. Cardboard, glue, scissors for game construction (if physical). Alternatively, access to game creation software (if digital).

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should start by researching and studying the nomenclature of amines, using the suggested resources and others of their choice.
  3. Look for amines present in everyday products, describing what they are used for and their importance.
  4. Begin to outline and develop the concept of the educational game.
  5. Define the game rules together, always remembering to relate them to the topic of amine nomenclature.
  6. Develop the game. If it is a physical game, use the available materials to build it. If it is digital, use appropriate software.
  7. Test the game, making adjustments as necessary.
  8. Prepare a detailed report explaining the nomenclature of amines, the importance of these substances in daily life, and the creation and operation of the game.

Project Delivery

The project lasts one week, and at the end, students must deliver:

  1. The educational game created by the group.

  2. The report containing the following four main topics:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of amine nomenclature and the relevance of this project.
    • Development: Explanation of the theory of amine nomenclature, the importance of amines in daily life, the creation and operation of the game.
    • Conclusion: Reflection on the learnings acquired during the project and the importance of the topic studied.
    • Bibliography: References of the materials used to develop the project.

Through the report, students must demonstrate an understanding of amine nomenclature, as well as illustrate with practical examples the presence and importance of these compounds in our daily lives. The game, in turn, will demonstrate the application of this knowledge in a playful and interactive way.
