Project Objective:
Learn chemical nomenclature by building physical models of organic compounds, explore different types of chains, branches, unsaturations, and hydrocarbons, and communicate their learnings through a detailed report.
Detailed Project Description:
Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. This project will involve the exploration of chemical nomenclature in a practical way, building physical models of different types of organic compounds.
The groups will choose five different organic compounds to build their models, each covering one of the following topics: naming the main chain of a compound, branches, unsaturations, and two different types of hydrocarbons.
Students will conduct detailed research on their chosen compounds, focusing on nomenclature and structure, and use this knowledge to build their models.
Each group member should actively participate in the research, construction, and documentation process of the project.
The project duration should be a minimum of 12 hours per student.
Required Materials:
- Materials to build models of organic compounds (e.g., molecular modeling kits, or alternatively, toothpicks and gummy candies)
- Internet access and library for research.
- Paper, pencils, markers, and other writing tools for documentation.

- Group Formation and Compound Definition: Students will form groups and choose together the compounds they want to model.
- Research: Each group will start a detailed research on the nomenclature of their chosen compounds and how to model them. We recommend using the reference resources mentioned in the introduction.
- Building the Models: The groups will use molecular modeling materials to build physical representations of their compounds. They should ensure to correctly represent the main chain, branches, unsaturations when applicable, and the type of hydrocarbon.
