Context
Chemistry is a fundamental science for our understanding of the world, and chemical formulas are a fundamental part of this science. Chemical formulas allow us to understand the composition of substances, what atoms are present and in what proportions, essential knowledge to understand chemical reactions, properties of substances and many other Chemistry concepts.
There are several types of chemical formulas, each one with a unique role. Molecular formulas indicate the amount of each type of atom in a molecule, while structural formulas show how these atoms are connected. Empirical formulas show the relative proportion of the types of atoms in a molecule, while skeletal formulas represent the structure of the molecule in a simple and concise way.
Chemical formulas are essential to understand the matter that surrounds us. They are used in all areas of science and industry, from medical research to the manufacture of plastic, from the development of new materials to space exploration. Without them, our understanding of the natural world would be extremely limited.
Next time you go to the supermarket, try to read the list of ingredients of some product. You will find several chemical formulas there, such as C12H22O11 (sucrose). By understanding these formulas, you will be able to understand what you are actually consuming, and that is just one example of how important chemical formulas are in our daily lives.

Project Goal
To acquire and demonstrate knowledge about the different types of chemical formulas (molecular, structural, empirical, and skeletal), through the investigation, analysis, and presentation about a chemical compound of their choice, fostering collaborative and creative work.
Detailed Project Description
The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must choose a chemical compound of interest, which will be the focus of their study. Each group will do a research on the compound, identifying its different formulas, describing its properties and real-world uses.
From this research, each group will have to create a visual presentation (poster, slide presentation, infographic, etc.) that presents, in a clear and concise way, the following information:
- Name of the chemical compound and why it was chosen.
- Molecular, structural, empirical, and skeletal formulas of the compound.
- Properties of the compound (melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, ...)
- Real-world uses of the compound.
- Interesting facts or curiosities about the compound.
Required Materials
- Internet access for research.
- Computer or other means to create the visual presentation (poster, infographic, etc.).
- Chemistry book (recommended for consultation and research).
Step-by-Step Guide to Carry Out the Activity

Group Formation - Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group should elect a leader who will be responsible for coordinating the group's activities and communication with the teacher.

The visual presentation of the chemical compound, containing all the information listed above, must be handed to the teacher on the determined date.

In addition, the groups must write a report containing the introduction (contextualizing the subject, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project), development (the theory behind the core topics of the project, explanation of the activity in detail, indicating the methodology used and finally presentation and discussion of the obtained results), conclusions (going back to the main points, explaining the obtained learnings and the conclusions drawn about the project) and the bibliography used.
Notice that the report is a document that complements the visual presentation, bringing more details about the chemical compound, the research done, and the methodology used, as well as reflections about the development of the project and the obtained learnings.
