Context
Organic compounds play a fundamental role in the existence and development of life as we know it, being essential components of diverse things such as DNA, medications, fuels, polymers, and paints. They are mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen, but can also contain oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, halogens, and a variety of other elements. The physical properties of these organic compounds, including their melting and boiling points, tend to be determined by their molecular structures and chemical bonds.
The polarity of an organic compound is an important characteristic that determines not only how the compound reacts to different substances, but also its physical properties. For example, polar organic compounds tend to have higher melting and boiling points than non-polar compounds, since intermolecular forces are stronger in polar compounds.
The melting and boiling points of organic compounds are also affected by the size and shape of the molecules, the type and number of chemical bonds they contain, and the presence of specific functional groups.
The importance of organic chemistry and the physical properties of organic compounds cannot be underestimated. It is essential for the development of new medications, materials, and technologies. In the real world, the applications of these compounds are vast, ranging from the pharmaceutical industry to food production and materials manufacturing. Understanding the physical properties of organic compounds is the first step to exploring and maximizing these applications.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: Deciphering the Physical Properties of Organic Compounds: An Experimental and Computational Approach
Project Objective
The activity aims to provide a practical experience for students to understand the physical properties of organic compounds, correlating with polarity, molecular structure, and functional group. The activity will be conducted in groups (3 to 5 students) and we estimate it will last approximately 12 to 15 hours divided into several sessions.
Detailed Project Description
Experimental Part:
-
Students will perform a series of experiments to determine the boiling and melting points of various organic compounds. They should also observe the differences in the solubility of these compounds in water.
Required materials: various organic compounds (e.g. ethyl alcohol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, etc.), thermometers, heating plates, test tubes, distilled water.
Step by step:
a. Carefully add a known amount of the organic compound to a test tube.
b. Heat the test tube on a heating plate, recording the temperature at which the compound starts to liquefy (melting point) and the temperature at which it starts to boil (boiling point).
c. Enhance your analysis by performing the solubility test. Add distilled water to the tube with the compound and observe if it is soluble or not.
d. Record all data and repeat the experiment for the other compounds.
Computational Part:
-
After the experiments, students will use computational tools to model the molecular structures of the organic compounds they worked with. This will help them understand the correlation between the molecular structure and the observed physical properties.
Required materials: computers with Internet access and molecular modeling software (e.g. Spartan, HyperChem, etc.).
Step by step:
a. Use a molecular modeling software to draw the structure of the organic compound.
b. Evaluate the molecule's polarity using the software tools.
c. Contrast the polarity, size, shape, and presence/absence of functional groups in the molecular structure of the organic compound and correlate with the physical properties observed in the experimental part.
Finally, the project result will be a final report that will contain the following structure:
Written Part:
-
Introduction: Should provide an overview of the importance of organic compounds and their physical properties. Students should also describe the objectives and relevance of the project.
-
Development: In this section, students should detail the experimental process and the steps followed in computational modeling. There should be a theoretical explanation that explains the observed phenomena. Students should insert graphs and tables, showing the results obtained. If possible, students should discuss the correlation between molecular structure, polarity, melting and boiling points, and solubility in water of the studied organic compounds.
-
Conclusion: Students should summarize the main points, synthesize the learnings obtained, and highlight the importance of a deep understanding of the physical properties of organic compounds for the development of modern science and technology.
-
Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they relied on for the project development. Including books, web pages, videos, etc.
Finally, students should self-assess their learning experience in terms of teamwork collaboration, time management, creative thinking, and proactivity.
