Contextualization
Nitrocompounds are organic substances that have one or more nitro groups (-NO2) linked to the carbon of a carbon chain. Their presence is common in some medications, dyes, explosives, and synthetic materials. And because they are essential in this variety of industrial applications, it becomes relevant to know not only the nomenclature but also the chemistry involved behind these substances.
The nomenclature of these compounds is defined by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and follows principles similar to the nomenclature of other classes of organic compounds. Thus, understanding the naming of these molecules facilitates the study and scientific communication within and outside the academic environment.
Mastery of chemical nomenclature is an essential skill for chemists and those who intend to pursue careers in the fields of science, medicine, or engineering. It not only provides a systematic way to name any new compound that is discovered but also allows identifying the basic structure and functionality of a compound from its name.
Introduction
The nomenclature of nitrocompounds is done based on the corresponding hydrocarbon, followed by the position and reference to the nitro group. Additionally, if there is more than one nitro group, the number of groups and their respective positions in the carbon chain must be indicated.
The use of nitrocompounds is vast and diversified. They are essential in the production of explosives, such as nitroglycerin and TNT, used in demolitions, mining, and defense. In the health field, some nitrocompounds, like nitrofurantoin, are used as antibiotics. In the chemical industry, they are used in the synthesis of dyes and polymers.
Understanding the nomenclature of these compounds will be the key to understanding this important class of organic compounds and their practical applications. Through this project, you will explore the theory, practice the nomenclature of these compounds, and see how they connect to the world around you.

Practical Activity: "Decoding Nitrocompounds: A Journey from Theory to Practice"
Project Objective
This project aims to enhance students' understanding of the structure, nomenclature, and applicability of nitrocompounds in everyday life. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 members and will have one week to complete the project, which may require two to four hours of dedication per student.
Detailed Project Description
The project is divided into three parts. In the first part, students must research and study the nomenclature of nitrocompounds. In the second part, students must create a "Nitrocompounds Dictionary." In the third part, students will identify the presence of nitrocompounds in everyday products or industrial applications and prepare a presentation.
Part 1: Research and Study
Students should conduct in-depth research on nitrocompounds, focusing on understanding their chemical structure, properties, how they are named, and their practical applications.
Part 2: Creation of the Nitrocompounds Dictionary
Based on the study conducted, the group must create a "Nitrocompounds Dictionary" in the form of a slide presentation. Each slide should contain: the name of the substance, the structural formula, a brief description, and one or two practical applications, if any. The dictionary must have at least ten slides, meaning ten different compounds.
Part 3: Nitrocompounds in Everyday Life
Each group must identify one or more everyday items or industrial applications that use nitrocompounds. The chosen items should be presented in slides, with images of the items or applications, the name of the nitrocompound involved, and an explanation of how the substance is used in that application.
For the development of the project, students can use any available materials, such as books, scientific journals, encyclopedias, and trustworthy websites on the internet.
We will evaluate both the technical content and the presentation and organization of the work. It is important that all group members participate and contribute to the project's development.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, groups must deliver:
- The "Nitrocompounds Dictionary" in slide presentation format.
- A slide presentation on the use of nitrocompounds in everyday life.
- A written report on the project, in the format of a scientific report. The report should include the following topics:
- Introduction: With a brief summary of the project, explaining the relevance of the topic and the project's objective.
- Development: Detailed description of the activities carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Include here all researched nitrocompounds and their found applications.
- Conclusions: A discussion on what was learned from the project, what difficulties were encountered (if any), and how they were overcome. This section should also contain a reflection on the technical and socioemotional skills developed during the project.
- Bibliography: A list of the information sources used to carry out the project.
All deliveries must be made in digital format.
The important thing here is for students to research, delve into the topic, and put into practice the concepts learned. The idea is that by the end of the project, students will have a solid knowledge of the nomenclature of nitrocompounds and their applications, as well as how to communicate their knowledge coherently and organized.
