Introduction
In this project, we will deepen our knowledge about ethers, a class of organic compounds of great relevance in chemistry. Ethers are characterized as organic compounds in which an oxygen atom is bonded to two carbon atoms. In this sense, their general formula is R-O-R', where R and R' represent alkyl or aryl radicals.
The study of ether nomenclature is essential for understanding their structure and properties. The way ethers are named varies according to their complexity and the presence of other functional groups in the molecule. The official nomenclature is based on the rules of IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry), while the usual nomenclature is based on conventions and common practices in chemistry.
The nomenclature of ethers allows us to identify the structure of the molecule and, from there, infer its physical and chemical properties, such as melting point, boiling point, solubility, reactivity, among others. Additionally, nomenclature facilitates communication among chemists, allowing them to speak the same “language” when referring to these substances.
Importance and Applications
Ethers are widely used in various areas of industry and science. They are used as solvents in chemical reactions, in the production of medicines, in the formulation of fuels and lubricants, in the manufacture of resins and plastics, among others. Additionally, some ethers have specific applications, such as ethyl ether, which was once widely used as an anesthetic.
The ability to recognize and correctly name an ether is an essential skill for any chemist. Not only does this allow for a better understanding of the properties and behaviors of these compounds, but it also facilitates communication and collaboration with other chemists. Furthermore, the correct nomenclature of ethers is crucial to avoid errors and misunderstandings that can have serious consequences, especially in industrial and medical contexts.

"Ethers in Our Daily Lives: Knowing and Naming"
Project Objective:
This project aims to deepen students' knowledge about the nomenclature of ethers and their relevance in our daily lives.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for investigating different examples of ethers present in everyday products, such as medicines, food, cleaning products, etc. Additionally, they should explore the structure of these compounds and name them according to IUPAC rules and usual nomenclature.
Necessary Materials:
- Computer with internet access for research.
- Organic Chemistry book (optional, but recommended).
Detailed Step-by-Step:

Group Formation and Ether Selection: Students divide into groups and each group selects a list of everyday products that contain ethers in their composition. This information can usually be found on product labels or in their online descriptions. Each group should select at least five different products for analysis.

Investigation and Research: Each group conducts detailed research on each of the selected ethers. This includes understanding their structure, properties, use, among others.

Identification and Nomenclature: Each group should identify which ether is present in each of the products and name it according to IUPAC rules and usual nomenclature.

Report Preparation: Each group prepares a detailed report describing their findings. The structure of the report is explained in the following section.
Project Deliverables:
Each group must submit a written report detailing their findings. The report should have the following sections:

Introduction: In this section, the group should contextualize the project, explaining the importance of ethers and their nomenclature, and stating the objectives of the project.

Development: In this section, the group should detail the activities carried out. Including the list of selected products, the structure of the ether present in each product (if possible, with a figure representing the structure), the official and usual nomenclature of the ether, and a discussion about the properties and uses of the ether.

Conclusions: In this section, the group should summarize their main findings. Additionally, they should discuss what they learned during the project execution and how this knowledge can be applied in future situations.

Bibliography: In this section, the group should list all the sources of information used during the project. This includes books, scientific articles, websites, videos, etc.
The report should be submitted in digital format and each group should make an oral presentation of their findings to the class. The teacher should evaluate both the written report and the oral presentation, taking into account the correct use of ether nomenclature and the understanding of the topic.
