Activity Title: Exploring the Physical Properties of Organic Compounds

Project Objective

This project aims to investigate and analyze the physical properties of selected organic compounds. Students will conduct experiments to determine the solubility in water and in organic compounds of the respective compounds.

Additionally, this project will provide an opportunity for students to work in teams, learn to manage their time, and enhance their communication and problem-solving skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will select three organic compounds (e.g., ethyl alcohol, acetone, hexane) and investigate two of their physical properties: solubility in water and solubility in an organic compound of the group's choice.

Each group will need to plan and execute the experiment, document their procedures, collect and analyze their data, and finally, prepare a detailed report of their findings.

Required Materials

  • Three different organic compounds.
  • Water.
  • Another organic compound that is not one of the three chosen for the experiment.
  • Test tubes.
  • Pipettes.
  • Analytical balance.
  • Stopwatch.
  • Appropriate safety equipment (goggles, apron, gloves).

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group will choose three organic compounds (e.g., ethyl alcohol, acetone, hexane) for the experiment.
  2. Students should research the properties of these compounds and record their expectations regarding the solubility of these compounds in water and in the chosen organic compound.
  3. Next, the groups will plan their experiment, deciding how they will test the solubility of the compounds in water and in the organic compound.
  4. After planning, the groups will conduct the experiment, taking care to accurately record the procedures used and the data collected.
  5. After collecting and recording the results, each group should analyze their data, comparing it with their original expectations and discussing any discrepancies.
  6. Finally, students will prepare a detailed report of their findings, including all the sections specified in the project description (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used).

Project Deliverables and Guidelines for the Written Document

After conducting the experiments, students must produce a comprehensive report with the following parts:

  1. Introduction: Here, students should contextualize the theme of the activity, highlight its relevance and applicability in the real world, and list the project's objectives.

  2. Development: This section should encompass a detailed description of the experiment conducted, the methodology used, insertion of tables or graphs illustrating the results obtained. Additionally, students should explain the theory about the physical properties of the organic compounds studied, linking them to the experiment conducted and the results observed.

  3. Conclusion: Here, students should summarize the results, compare them with the expectations they initially had, discuss whether and how these expectations were met or exceeded, and draw conclusions about the activity conducted.

  4. Bibliography: In this section, students should list all the sources consulted for the activity, such as books, websites, and videos.

Remember that the final report should be a combination of theory and practice, where the student can relate what they learned in theory to what they observed in practice. The report should be clear, coherent, and follow the rules of good writing.
