In our daily lives, Chemistry is always present, even indirectly. One of these forms is through phenols, an extremely important organic group that will be the subject of our study in this project.
Introduction
Phenols are chemical compounds that have a benzene ring structure with one or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) attached. The designation of phenol for these compounds is actually derived from the simplest of them, hydroxybenzene, commonly known as phenol. Phenols have distinct properties due to the strong interaction between the hydroxyl and the aromatic ring. Some of these properties include: high reactivity due to the resonance phenomenon, high solubility in water, and relatively high acidity (for an organic compound).
This class of compounds has many applications in industry and science, such as synthesizing plastics, resins, and medications. In addition, phenols are important in the environment as they are produced by a variety of plants and microorganisms.
Contextualization and Relevance
In the context of the chemical industry, phenols are crucial in the production of a wide variety of products, from plastics and resins to pesticides and medications. For example, Bisphenol A is a chemical compound used in the manufacture of plastics and resins, while phenol is a key ingredient in the production process of aspirin.
However, alongside all these uses, it is essential to understand the impact of phenols on the environment and human health. Improper handling of these compounds can lead to serious health problems, such as skin irritation and liver damage, as well as negative effects on the environment, such as water and soil contamination.

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Phenols"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to integrate the knowledge acquired in Chemistry with a critical and in-depth analysis of a real-world situation. This will be done through the study of phenols, their properties, uses, and effects on health and the environment.
Students, working in groups of 3 to 5, will also develop skills such as teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Detailed Activity Description
The project will be divided into two main parts: a theoretical investigation on phenols and an analysis of a real case involving phenols.
In the theoretical part, students must research and prepare a report on phenols. The report should cover the following topics:
- Definition and classification of phenols.
- Chemical and physical properties of phenols, with an emphasis on resonance phenomena and their implications.
- Industrial and scientific applications of phenols, with the description of at least three examples.
- Impacts of phenols on human health and the environment.
For the analysis of the real case, groups must choose a real-world situation involving phenols. This can be a case of environmental contamination, a specific industrial use, or a phenol-based medication. Students should investigate the case, including its implications for human health and the environment, and present their findings in a PowerPoint presentation.

- Write a detailed report covering the four topics mentioned above. The report should be well-structured, with an introduction, development, and conclusion.

- Research reliable information about the case and prepare a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation should include the description of the case, its impacts on human health and the environment, and possible solutions.
- Finalize each part of the project and prepare for the presentation.
