Contextualization
The concept of acidity and basicity is inevitably linked to our daily lives, present in the foods we eat, the medicines we take, and even in the cleaning products we use. In quantitative terms, these properties are defined by a scale known as pH, which ranges from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic).
Chemistry, particularly Organic Chemistry, addresses these concepts in detail, examining how substances interact with each other in terms of proton donors (acids) and proton acceptors (bases). These concepts are crucial for understanding the chemical reactions that constantly occur around us. Furthermore, understanding these concepts is essential for the correct and safe application of various materials in our daily lives.
In fact, acidity and basicity have a great impact on our daily lives. Basic substances, for example, are commonly found in cleaning products, while acidic substances are often used in food and beverages to provide flavor. In addition, all biological systems need to maintain a delicate acid-base balance to function properly.
Some professions are directly linked to the control and manipulation of the acidity and basicity of solutions, such as biochemists, pharmacists, chemical engineers, and even chefs!
For this reason, understanding the characteristics of acidic and basic substances, as well as how to handle them safely and effectively, is of paramount importance.
Hands-on Activity
Activity Title: Homemade Acids and Bases Manipulation
Objective:
The objective of this project is for students to become familiar with the concepts of acidity and basicity through a hands-on experiment using household items. Additionally, they will learn to identify and classify substances as acidic or basic. Finally, students will gain an understanding of the applications of these substances in everyday life.
Project Description:
This activity will last for two weeks and will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students. The activity will be divided into two parts: the first involves conducting a hands-on experiment, and the second involves writing a detailed report on the experiment.
Required Materials:
- Water
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Lemon juice
- Liquid soap
- Litmus paper or pH paper
- 6 clear cups
- Spoons
Step by Step:
Part 1: Hands-on Experiment
- Prepare six clear cups and label them 1 to 6.
- In cup 1, add water; in cup 2, vinegar; in cup 3, a spoonful of baking soda diluted in water; in cup 4, lemon juice; in cup 5, liquid soap diluted in water; and in cup 6, a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.
- Use litmus paper or pH paper to measure the acidity or basicity of each cup. Record the pH values for each solution.
- Classify the substances in cups 1 to 6 in order of acidity and basicity.

It should be emphasized that the "development" section should contain a detailed discussion of the results of the experiment and their connection to the theoretical concepts learned. In addition, during the presentation of the results, students should demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts of acidity and basicity and be able to explain their relevance in the real world.
