Context

Organic functions are compounds that contain carbon atoms in their constitution and are significantly present in everyday life, being essential to understand for various areas, from the study of fuels to the production of medications.

In this project, we will delve deeply into the world of organic functions, understanding not only basic issues of nomenclature and characteristics, but also the specific properties that these substances present and the differences between them. We will explore organic chemistry concepts such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides, and the fact that all these functions are linked by a network of interconnected transformations.

We will study problems involving organic functions so that we are able to understand and analyze organic processes, from the purification of substances to esterification and saponification reactions. With this, we will be able to apply these concepts in solving practical problems, such as the identification of organic compounds, synthesis of new compounds, and even in the development of new technologies and medications.

Importance

Organic functions are an integral and crucial part of the world we live in. They are present in virtually all areas of our lives, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, from the fuels we use to the medicines we take to improve our health. Not to mention their fundamental role in technology, agriculture, and the economy.

Deepening the studies and understanding the properties and reactions of organic compounds is not only a necessity for those who wish to specialize in fields related to chemistry, but also an important skill for everyday life and a way to better understand the world around us. After all, organic functions are an integral part of our existence and directly impact our lives in various ways.

Practical Activity: 'Journey through Organic Functions'

Project Objective

  1. Understand the nomenclature, properties, characteristics, and differences between organic functions.
  2. Solve problems related to organic functions and apply the concepts in practice.
  3. Develop teamwork skills, time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Project Description

For this project, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Over a period of approximately two weeks, each group will intensively explore organic functions by creating an educational webinar on the topic. The content should involve key concepts of Chemistry and Biology, connecting them to real scenarios and practical applications.

Required Materials

  1. Books and study materials on organic functions.
  2. Computers with internet access for research on specialized websites, books, and articles.
  3. Presentation software (such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi) for creating the webinar slides.
  4. Video editing software (such as iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, or Adobe Premiere) for producing the webinar.

Step by Step

  1. Research and Planning (3 days): Each group must select a specific organic function to focus on for their project and develop a study plan. The plan should include a schedule for the project, dividing tasks and responsibilities among group members.

  2. Study and Understanding (4 days): Conduct a detailed study of the chosen organic function, focusing on nomenclature, properties, characteristics, and, if applicable, differences from other organic functions. Think about issues where this compound is relevant and explore ways to present it.

  3. Webinar Development (4 days): Develop each part of the webinar. Create slides, graphics, images, and texts that help explain the concepts related to the organic function clearly and concisely. Remember to connect the concepts with practical situations and everyday examples.

  4. Webinar Recording (1 day): Record the webinar. Remember to check the quality of the audio and video and ensure that all slides and graphics are clear and legible.

  5. Review and Feedback (2 days): After recording, review the produced material and make the necessary corrections. This is the time to fine-tune and adjust details.

  6. Project Submission: Submit the webinar video on the study platform.

  7. Report Development: As part of the submission, each group must submit a well-structured report of the entire learning and project development process. This document should have the following topics:

    • Introduction: Description of the studied organic function, why it was chosen, and its relevance in the real world.
    • Development: Explain the theory learned throughout the project. Describe in detail the activities carried out, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used as a basis for working on the project - books, websites, videos, etc.

This activity involves a lot of research, presenting information in a clear and engaging way, and developing audiovisual production. As a result, students should learn to deal with a large volume of information, work in teams, and present information in a way that is easy for others to understand.
