Contextualization

Organic Chemistry is one of the most fascinating fields of chemistry that deals with a variety of carbon-containing compounds, among which are amines. Amines are derivatives of ammonia (NH3), where one, two, or three hydrogens have been replaced by alkyl or aryl groups.

These compounds are classified as primary (RNH2), secondary (R2NH), or tertiary (R3N), depending on the number of hydrogens replaced in ammonia. The study of these molecules is interesting not only due to their structural complexity but also because of their unique chemical properties and their wide range of applications in various industries and sciences.

Amines can be found in a variety of contexts in the natural and synthetic world. They are essential in a wide range of biochemical compounds, such as amino acids, neurotransmitters, hormones, and vitamins. Additionally, many medications, such as analgesics, contain amines in their chemical structure. Amines are also essential components of industrial products, such as polymers, dyes, and polyurethane foams.

Understanding amines and their properties is therefore essential both for understanding life on Earth and for the creation of new materials and medications. This project aims to explore the concept, nomenclature, structure, and properties of amines, and students will have the opportunity to investigate the diverse and significant applications that amines have in our daily lives.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Investigation and Applications of Amines

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to research and discuss amines, their properties, nomenclature, structure, and applications in daily life and the industrial sector. Students will be encouraged to acquire a deep understanding of amines through research, group discussion, and presentation.

Work Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for researching amines and producing a detailed report, as well as an engaging presentation to present their findings.

The report should include the following topics:

  • Amine Concept
  • Nomenclature
  • Types of Amines (primary, secondary, tertiary)
  • Amine Properties
  • Applications of Amines in daily life
  • Use of Amines in Industry

The presentation should be creative, informative, and engaging. Use images, videos, animations, or any other audiovisual means to make the presentation more interesting.

Required Materials:

  • Internet Access
  • Presentation Program (Powerpoint, Google Slides, etc)
  • Text Editing Program (Word, Google Docs, etc)

Step by Step:

  1. Each group will conduct in-depth research on amines, using various media such as textbooks, scientific articles, educational videos, and reliable websites.

  2. After the research, the groups will gather to discuss their findings and plan the structure of their report and presentation.

  3. Next, the groups will start writing the report clearly and concisely, making sure to cover all required topics.

  4. After finishing the report, the groups will begin working on their presentation. The groups should strive to create a presentation that is engaging, informative, and visually appealing.

  5. Once the report and presentation are complete, each group will present their findings to the class.

  6. After the presentation, there will be a classroom discussion where all students will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

Project Submission:

Upon completion of the research, report, and presentation, the groups must submit the following items for evaluation:

  • The research report, which should contain all required topics and follow the structure of an academic report (introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography);
  • The presentation, which should be engaging, informative, and visually appealing. This presentation should complement the research report and allow students to demonstrate their understanding of amines in a more dynamic and interactive way;
  • The project conclusion, which should summarize the main findings, the skills learned, and the results achieved;
  • The list of bibliographic references in the appropriate format, showing where the information was obtained and allowing students to acknowledge the work of others.
