In our contemporary world, Chemistry plays a very important role, since it is intrinsically involved in many areas, from medicine and biology to technology and the environment. In the field of Organic Chemistry, aldehydes are a class of organic compounds that have a significant impact on several of these areas. They are characterized by the presence of the functional group -CHO (formyl group), which consists of a carbon bonded to oxygen by a double bond and to two other atoms or groups of atoms by single bonds.

Aldehydes are very versatile compounds. In addition to being used to manufacture other chemical compounds, they are found in a variety of products that we use daily, such as cleaning products, food preservatives, and even in fragrances and flavors. For example, vanillin, an aldehyde, is the main component of the vanilla flavor.

Learning about aldehydes is not just a matter of acquiring chemical knowledge. It is also about understanding how chemical substances affect our daily lives and how we can influence the world around us with this knowledge. Practical Activity: "Mysterious World of Aldehydes"

Objective of the Project

This project aims to familiarize you with aldehydes and their importance in the world around us. You will research and explore the use of aldehydes in different areas of our daily lives, from the food industry to pharmaceuticals.

Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students should choose a common use of aldehydes and, in addition to describing the chemical process involved, should contextualize it within a current problem, whether environmental, social, or economic, and propose a solution to this problem. Each group should take no more than two to four hours to complete the project, and the deadline is one week.

• Notebook or paper for notes
• Word processing software (Word, Google Docs, etc.) for the written report

Step by Step to Perform the Activity

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Choose an aldehyde application to explore. It can be anything from the formaldehyde used in the preservation of biological specimens to the vanillin found in vanilla.
3. Research the aldehyde you have chosen: where it is used, why it is used, what its chemical properties are, why it is effective in its application, and any problems associated with its use (e.g. health or environmental issues).
4. Formulate a solution or alternative to any problem you identify.
5. Write a detailed report explaining everything you have learned about the aldehyde, detailing the associated problem and the proposed solution.

Project Deliverables

1. Written Report: Each group must submit a written report following the structure below:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen aldehyde, its relevance, real-world application, and the objective of this project;
   • Development: Explain the theory behind the chosen aldehyde, its application, the associated problem, and the proposed solution. Detail the research methodology used and present and discuss the results obtained;
   • Conclusion: Conclude by summarizing the main points, explaining the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project;
   • Bibliography: List all sources of information used.

2. Oral Presentation: Each group must present their project to the class, explaining what they have learned about the chosen aldehyde, the associated problem, and the proposed solution.

Working in groups and respecting deadlines are fundamental aspects of this project. The goal here is not only to learn about aldehydes but also to improve teamwork skills, research, clear and concise presentation of information, and critical thinking about real-world problem solutions.
