Aldehydes are organic compounds that belong to the class of oxygenated functions. This function is characterized by the presence of the functional group -CHO, which is formed by a carbon bonded to a hydrogen and an oxygen (by a double bond). This group will always appear at the end of the carbon chain. Aldehydes are of great importance in the industry, literally giving flavor and scent to our daily lives!

Aldehydes have various applications in the perfume industry, as many of these compounds have pleasant odors. For example, benzaldehyde is used to mimic the fragrance of almonds. In the food industry, aldehydes are employed as artificial flavors. For instance, cinnamic aldehyde tastes like cinnamon and formaldehyde, also known as formaldehyde, is used in the production of resins, disinfectants, and in the preservation of biological tissues.

In chemistry, nomenclature is a fundamental tool for communicating chemical structures and concepts. For this reason, it is crucial to understand and correctly apply the nomenclature rules of aldehydes, which will allow precise communication and understanding in future scientific studies and work.

Practical Activity: "The Art of Aldehydes"

Project Objective

This project aims to explain the nomenclature of aldehydes, their physical and chemical properties, and their use in the industry in a playful, dynamic, and engaging way involving students in a practical and theoretical work.

Detailed Project Description

Students must create a "Gallery of Aldehydes", where each group will be responsible for choosing a specific aldehyde, naming it correctly, understanding its properties and uses.

Next, they should elaborate a three-dimensional visual representation of the molecular structure of the chosen aldehyde, using recyclable materials. For this, students can use common objects such as toothpicks, modeling clay, corks, among others.

The group should also produce a short informative text about the aldehyde, explaining its nomenclature, properties, and practical applications. This information will be used as captions for the artwork shown in the "Gallery of Aldehydes".

Finally, each group must present their work to the others, briefly explaining what they learned throughout the process.

Required Materials

  1. Office supplies (pens, papers, computers, etc.).
  2. Recyclable materials (corks, caps, toothpicks, modeling clay, etc.).
  3. Books, magazines, or internet access for research.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group must choose an aldehyde to study.
  3. All group members must study the nomenclature of the chosen aldehyde.
  4. Each group should research the properties and uses of the aldehyde they chose.
  5. Using recyclable materials, students must create a physical model of the aldehyde's molecular structure.
  6. After creating the structure, each group must write an informative text about the chosen aldehyde.
  7. Once everything is ready, the groups must present their work to the class.

Project Delivery

After completing the practical part, students must prepare a written report on the work done, which should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: The student must contextualize the chosen aldehyde, its relevance and application in the real world, and also the objective of this project.
  2. Development: They must explain the aldehyde's nomenclature, properties, and uses, detail the activity performed, indicate the methodology used, and present the final result obtained.
  3. Conclusion: They should summarize the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the experience.
  4. Bibliography: Students must indicate the research sources for the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The final project delivery includes the physical model of the aldehyde, oral presentation, and the written report.
