Context
Alcohol is a chemical substance present in our daily lives, whether in alcoholic beverages, cleaning products, medications, among others. The word 'alcohol' comes from the Arabic 'al-kuhl', which means 'essence'. Alcohols form a class of organic compounds that have one or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) directly linked to saturated carbon atoms.
Alcohols can be classified as primary, secondary, and tertiary, according to the number of hydrogens linked to the carbon carrying the alcohol function. Furthermore, they can also be classified as monohydroxyl, dihydroxyl, and polyhydroxyl, according to the number of hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Compounds known and used daily belong to this class, such as ethanol (grain alcohol), methanol (wood alcohol), propanol, among others.
Alcohol is a common substance widely used in our daily lives, but its use requires responsibility and knowledge. Some alcohols are safe for human consumption, while others are toxic. Moreover, alcohol is a flammable substance that can cause accidents if not handled carefully. Therefore, it is important to understand the chemistry of alcohols, their properties, and characteristics.
In the real world, many of the social and health problems we face are related to the misuse of alcohol, such as alcoholism, traffic accidents, violence, among others. Additionally, many industrial processes use alcohol as an important solvent or as a raw material for the production of other chemicals.
In this project, you will be invited to deepen your knowledge about alcohol, investigating its properties, characteristics, uses, benefits, and risks. Furthermore, you will be challenged to propose individual and collective solutions for the responsible and safe use of alcohol.

Practical Activity: The Chemistry of Alcohol
Project Objective
This project aims to allow students to deepen their knowledge, especially regarding the properties and characteristics of alcohols, and to understand the effects and impacts caused by these chemical compounds. In addition to applying chemistry concepts, this activity also aims to develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.
Detailed Project Description
The project consists of conducting theoretical research and developing a practical experiment, followed by the preparation of a final report consolidating the acquired knowledge and experiences during the activity.
1. Theoretical Study
Students will research the topic, focusing on alcohol concepts, their properties and characteristics, as well as the effects of alcohol on the human body and the environmental risks of its improper use and disposal.
2. Practical Experiment
Students should set up a mini-test to identify the presence of alcohol in different liquid substances.
3. Final Report
Students must prepare a report, where they will record the entire learning process, from theoretical research to the practical experiment, accompanied by a critical and reflective analysis of the results obtained.

- Potassium Dichromate K2Cr2O7 solution
- Concentrated Sulfuric Acid H2SO4
Detailed Step-by-Step
1. Theoretical Study
Students should conduct a detailed research on the topic of alcohols, focusing on the characteristics and properties of these compounds, as well as the possible effects of alcohol on human and environmental health. Additionally, students should research the alcohol identification test using the Jones reagent (potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid).
2. Practical Experiment
Safely, under the supervision of the teacher, students must perform the experiment on the different collected liquids. They should add the potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid solution to each liquid, one at a time, and observe if a color change occurs (from orange to green), indicating the presence of alcohol.
3. Final Report
Students should write a report on the project, including the introduction (with the justification and objective of the project), the development (with the theoretical review and detailed description of the practical experiment), the conclusions (analyzing the results obtained and proposing critical reflections and solutions for responsible use and disposal of alcohol), and the bibliography used.
Project Deliverables
The final result of the project should be a well-structured report containing the theoretical review, detailed description of the practical experiment, critical analysis of the results obtained, proposal of solutions for responsible use and disposal of alcohol, and reflections on the learning acquired during the project. The report must be submitted at the end of the week.
This work is to be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and should take two to four hours per participating student to complete.
