Cyclic hydrocarbons are organic compounds formed exclusively by carbon and hydrogen atoms, where the carbon atoms are joined to form a cycle or ring. These can be classified as alicyclic (non-aromatic) and aromatic.

Alicyclic hydrocarbons are compounds that have one or more carbon rings in their structure but do not exhibit aromatic characteristics. They are divided into two main groups, cycloalkanes and cycloalkenes, which have single and double bonds, respectively.

In contrast, aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of compounds that contain one or more aromatic rings. The simplest and most common example of an aromatic hydrocarbon is benzene, which is a compound with a cyclic structure of six carbons with alternating single and double bonds.

Importance and Application of Cyclic Hydrocarbons

Cyclic hydrocarbons have a wide range of applications in the chemical industry and directly influence our lives. Among their applications, the production of medicines, dyes, fertilizers, plastics, rubbers, and even explosives stand out.

These compounds are also used in the production of fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, and are essential components in cleaning products, paints, and varnishes.

The study of cyclic hydrocarbons is therefore essential not only to understand the functioning of these substances and their properties but also to assess the impacts of their production and use in our daily lives.

Practical Activity "Exploring the World of Cyclic Hydrocarbons"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore topics in Chemistry and Biology to better understand what cyclic hydrocarbons are, their properties, applications, and impacts on human health and the environment.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for creating a "Catalog of Cyclic Hydrocarbons." This catalog should include:

  1. Definition and classification of cyclic hydrocarbons.
  2. Detailed description of at least five cyclic hydrocarbons, including their chemical and physical properties, structures, and applications.
  3. Discussion on the production and impacts of cyclic hydrocarbons on health and the environment.
  4. Proposal of a solution to mitigate one of the identified problems related to cyclic hydrocarbons.

In addition, each group must present an analysis of the risks and benefits of using each cyclic hydrocarbon presented, considering composition, toxicity, reactivity, and the level of exposure to them.

Required Materials

  • Books and scientific articles on Cyclic Hydrocarbons and their applications.
  • Computer with internet access for research.
  • Text editing program for creating the document.

Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should study the concept and classification of cyclic hydrocarbons.
  3. Select at least five cyclic hydrocarbons to be included in the catalog and research their properties, structures, and applications.
  4. Analyze the environmental and health impacts related to the production and use of the selected cyclic hydrocarbons.
  5. Propose a solution to one of the identified problems.
  6. Each group must prepare a written document containing all researched information and discussions.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver a document containing:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.
  • Development: Theory on cyclic hydrocarbons, description of the activities carried out, presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Summary of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project.
  • Bibliography: Sources consulted during the project.

In addition, each group must present their "Catalog of Cyclic Hydrocarbons" to the entire class, highlighting the main discoveries and the proposed solution to one of the problems related to cyclic hydrocarbons.

The project should be developed over a period of 4 weeks, with an estimated time of over twelve hours of work per student.
