What is an ether?

Ether is a type of organic compound, which has an oxygen atom bonded to two carbon atoms. The general structure of ether can be represented as R-O-R', where R and R' represent any alkyl or aryl group. Ethers are considered very versatile compounds, due to their wide range of industrial and scientific uses.

Why is it important to learn about ethers?

Knowledge about the nomenclature of ethers is of paramount importance in organic chemistry, as ethers are key compounds in a series of chemical reactions. They are used as solvents, in the production of plastics and resins, as refrigerants, and play a fundamental role in the production of anesthesia medications.

How is the nomenclature of ethers done?

The nomenclature of ethers is defined by IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and is based on the names of the two groups R and R' attached to the oxygen atom, followed by the word 'ether'. The group with fewer carbons is named first and, in case of equality, the groups are ordered alphabetically.

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with a practical and contextualized understanding of the nomenclature of ethers in Organic Chemistry and its importance in the fields of industry and science.

Project Description

In this activity, groups of 3 to 5 students will be challenged to research and present ethers and their nomenclature in a creative and engaging way.

Necessary Materials

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.).
  3. Camera to record the presentation (optional).
  4. Various materials for creating models or posters, if desired.

Step by Step

  1. Initial Research: Students should start by researching more about the nomenclature of ethers. They should research examples of ethers, their practical application, and how they are named. Each student in the group should read and understand the material well in order to explain it to others.

  2. Presentation Planning: Based on the knowledge acquired in the research, the group should plan a presentation that addresses the nomenclature of ethers in a playful and didactic way. It can be in the form of a game, a play, a song, or any creative way to convey the information.

  3. Presentation Creation: Students should create the presentation using the chosen software. The presentation should include, at least, examples of ethers, the nomenclature rule, and practical applications of ethers.

  4. Presentation Preparation: The group should rehearse the presentation to ensure that all members understand the content and are ready to explain it in a didactic way.

In the report, each section should be elaborated as follows:
