We are not just talking about adding oxygen to a substance. Oxidation, in the broader context of organic chemistry, refers to the increase in the number of bonds of a carbon atom to hydrogen atoms or the decrease in the number of bonds to more electronegative atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, among others.

Catalysts, whether inorganic, organic, or enzymatic, play a fundamental role in oxidation processes, as they increase the reaction rates by lowering the activation energy. The selection of the correct catalyst is a crucial point, as it can influence the selectivity, yield, and even the safety of the process.

Synthetic routes, on the other hand, are the plan outlined by chemists for the production of complex organic compounds. Oxidation reactions are often present in these routes and help transform simple molecules into more complex structures. The fine-tuning of these routes is what makes the production of a multitude of organic products possible, from medicines to plastics.

The global scenario in recent years has demanded that industrial sectors reinvent themselves and seek more sustainable alternatives. Organic chemistry is not exempt from this, and oxidation and its catalysts are at the center of this relevant discussion. Practical Activity - 'Unraveling Oxidation Reactions'

Project Objective

The project aims to deepen students' understanding of oxidation reactions in organic chemistry, from key concepts to practical applications. It also aims to foster teamwork, developing communication, time management, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students will conduct a collaborative research project. Divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, they should research and create a presentation on a topic chosen from the following options:

  1. 'Oxidation processes in the pharmaceutical industry'
  2. 'Synthetic routes involving oxidation reactions'
  3. 'Influence of catalysts on oxidation reactions'
  4. 'Oxidation reactions and sustainability'

In addition to exploring the theoretical part, groups must relate the concepts studied to real-world examples, demonstrating a practical understanding of the content. The presentation can be done through slides, posters, or videos and should be creative, fun, playful, and highly informative.

Furthermore, each group must choose a simple experiment that demonstrates an oxidation reaction to perform. The experiment should be conducted safely and accompanied by detailed explanation and analysis.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access and bibliography for research.
  2. Depending on the presentation format: computer with software for creating slides or videos, materials for creating posters.
  3. Materials for the chosen experiment - to be determined by the group according to the reaction they plan to demonstrate.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Choose a topic to research and present.
  3. Conduct research using recommended sources and others of your choice.
  4. Prepare a presentation on the chosen topic, making sure to include real-world examples.
  5. Choose and plan an experiment that demonstrates an oxidation reaction.
  6. Perform the experiment, documenting all steps and observations.
  7. Prepare an explanation and analysis of your experiment, including discussion of the results and connections made with the theoretical material.

Students should spend between 5 to 10 hours on the project. The deadline for submission is one month.

Project Deliverables

  1. Presentation (slides, poster, or video) on the chosen topic.

  2. Documentation of the experiment conducted.

  3. A written report, which should include:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the topic, relevance and real-world application, and project objective.

    • Development: Detailed explanation of the theory behind the project topic, description of the activity performed, methodology used, presentation and discussion of the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, key learnings, and conclusions about the project.

    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used for the project work.

Upon completing this project, you will have not only deepened your knowledge of oxidation reactions but also enhanced important skills such as research, teamwork, and communication.
