Introduction

Phenol is an organic compound that belongs to the hydrocarbon family. It consists of a benzene ring linked to a hydroxyl group (OH). This simple structure gives rise to a vast and complex range of compounds, all of which are variants of phenol, known as phenols or phenolic compounds.

Phenols are classified as weak acids due to their ability to donate a proton (H+) from the hydroxyl group to an aqueous solution. Even though they are weak, the acidity of phenols is higher than that of alcohols, thanks to the delocalization of the oxygen's lone pair after the loss of the proton that stabilizes the structure.

But how do we name phenols? One of the responsibilities that fall upon a chemist is the correct nomenclature of chemical compounds. This project will focus on the nomenclature of phenols, a topic that, although it may seem simple at first glance, can be quite complex.

Contextualization

The nomenclature of phenols plays a huge role in various areas of science and industry, from the creation of new medicines to the development of new synthetic materials. It is the universal language that chemists use to communicate and understand the structure and properties of organic compounds.

Phenols and their derivatives have a wide range of applications in the real world. They are used in disinfectants, resins, plastics, medicines, cosmetics and even in the production of explosives. Furthermore, many phenols are bioactive compounds that have physiological effects on living organisms, including antiseptic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Therefore, to fully engage with the world of organic chemistry and its applications, it is essential to understand the nomenclature of phenols. And that is what this project aims to provide.

Practical Activity

Title: "Unveiling the Nomenclature of Phenols"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to deepen students' knowledge on phenols and their nomenclature, by developing the ability to properly recognize the structure and name of various phenols.

Detailed Description of the Project:

This project will be based on research, discussion and the creation of a database of phenols in the form of flashcards. Each card will contain a different phenol, with its name, structure and practical applications.

Required Materials:

  1. Organic Chemistry books
  2. Internet access for research
  3. Card stock paper
  4. Colored pens
  5. Computer for scanning the cards

Step-by-Step Guide to the Activity:

  1. Initial research: Each group should begin by doing a general research on phenols and their nomenclature. This will serve to familiarize yourselves with the terminology and rules for naming phenols.

  2. Elaboration of the flashcards: Next, each group should select 10 different phenols to create the flashcards. For each phenol, the group should draw the structure of the phenol, name it correctly and list at least two practical applications for that phenol.

  3. Peer review: After elaborating the flashcards, each group should trade their cards with another group for review. The peers should check the correctness of the nomenclature and structure of the phenols, and suggest possible corrections.

  4. Refining the flashcards: Based on the feedback received, each group should refine their flashcards and finalize them.

  5. Scanning the flashcards: The flashcards should be scanned and sent to the teacher for final review.

  6. Writing the report: The students should write a report, detailing their journey through this project, from their initial research to the elaboration and refinement of the flashcards. Each report should contain:

    Introduction: Detailing the aim of the project and why phenols and their nomenclature are important.

    Development: Describing the research process and the creation of the flashcards. Discuss how the phenols were chosen, the difficulties faced and the decisions made. Describe the methodology used for the peer review and the corrections made based on the feedback received.

    Conclusions: Conclude the work by restating your main points, lessons learned during the project and conclusions drawn about the topic.

    References: State the sources used during the research.

The project is designed for groups of 3 to 5 students to work together. It is estimated that for each participating student, it will be necessary to invest between 5 to 10 hours to conduct the research, elaborate the flashcards, review the colleagues' flashcards and write the final report. The submission deadline is one month from the project's starting date.
