Question Tags

Context

Introduction

Question tags are small questions asked at the end of a declarative sentence, mainly used to confirm or check something. Expressions like 'isn't it?', 'don't you?', and 'can they?' are examples of question tags in English. They are very common in the English language and are essential for fluency and understanding of this language.

The structure of the question tag depends on the main verb of the sentence. If the main verb is positive, the question tag will be negative, and vice versa. Additionally, there are a set of rules according to the different types of verbs (modal verbs, auxiliaries, etc.) and the type of sentence (affirmative, negative, interrogative).

It is also important to note that the use of question tags can vary greatly according to the context and nuances of the language, making their learning a challenging and interesting task.

Context

Knowing how to use question tags correctly is an essential skill for anyone who wants to speak English fluently and naturally. Besides being very common in everyday conversations, question tags are frequently used in various formal situations, such as interviews, presentations, and business meetings. Moreover, the correct use of question tags is an important criterion in the evaluation of English proficiency exams, such as TOEFL and IELTS.

Therefore, mastering question tags can open doors to new academic and professional opportunities worldwide, as English is the most widely spoken language internationally, and proficiency in it can differentiate a candidate in the global job market.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Building Dialogues with Question Tags'

Activity Objective

The purpose of this project is to empower students to use question tags correctly, recognize their different forms and uses in the English language, and apply them in a real situation of language use.

Detailed Project Description

Divided into groups of three to five members, students will be tasked with creating a dialogue script that must be acted out and presented to the class. This dialogue should include at least 15 examples of question tags used correctly.

The story of this dialogue is open-ended, it can be a daily life situation, a job interview, a business meeting, among others. The important thing is that the question tags are included in the script in a real and natural way.

Additionally, as a challenge element and to encourage research on the topic, each group must include at least 3 examples of rarer question tags or with peculiar nuances of meaning.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pencil for drafting the script.
  • Material for the production and recording of the dialogue (camera or smartphone, costumes, setting, etc.).

Activity Steps

  1. Students must form groups of three to five students.
  2. Initially, everyone should research about question tags, how they are formed, used, and their different nuances. This can be done through books, internet sites, YouTube videos, among other available resources.
  3. Based on the researched material, students must create a dialogue script in English that contains 15 examples of question tags. Do not forget the 3 examples of rarer question tags or with peculiar nuances of meaning.
  4. After creating the script, students must act out and record their dialogue.
  5. After recording, the video should be watched to verify if all question tags were used correctly.
  6. After recording, each group must prepare a report on the project.

Project Deliverables

The group must deliver two final products:

  1. The recording of the dialogue in English.
  2. A written report, following the structure of: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

In the Introduction, students must contextualize the theme of question tags, their relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.

In the Development, the theory about question tags learned should be included, explaining the creation and execution of the dialogue, and pointing out the results obtained, with examples of the question tags used and their role in the dialogue.

In the Conclusions, the learnings about the use of question tags and the project experience should be highlighted.

In the Bibliography, the sources used in the process should be cited appropriately.
