Oral Activities

Contextualization

The ability to express oneself in a foreign language, especially English, is seen as an essential skill in the contemporary world. Moreover, mastering oral activities in English becomes increasingly relevant in an interconnected world where the exchange of information and fluent communication are crucial for personal and professional success.

In this sense, it is worth noting that improving oral skills in English goes beyond the classroom, as it can open doors to cultural exchanges, international professional opportunities, and a better understanding of global content. Therefore, the proper development of this skill is a powerful tool for full integration into the globalized world.

Introduction

In this project, we will explore oral activities in English, that is, the process of speaking in the English language. The main objective at this stage is to deeply understand the importance of oral expression, its structures, rules, and main characteristics. It is a critical component for the effective learning of a language, as it allows direct and instant communication with other language speakers.

In the context of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), oral activities can be classified into two categories: planned and spontaneous. Planned activities involve scripts and prior preparation, while spontaneous activities occur naturally during conversation. Both types are important for the development of fluency and involve aspects such as pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure.

Furthermore, it is relevant to highlight the connection of oral activities with sociocultural and pragmatic aspects. That is, the use of idiomatic expressions, slang, colloquial or formal language, and the adequacy of language according to the social and cultural context are also part of oral competence.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Podcast in English: A Journey into Oral Activities"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to work together to create, produce, and present a podcast entirely in English, focusing on a common topic of interest. In doing so, they should strengthen their communication and oral expression skills in English, as well as acquire skills in content production and teamwork.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, will develop a 10 to 15-minute podcast in English. Each group must select a common topic of interest to discuss during the podcast. Suggested topics can range from global issues to pop culture, science, technology, history, or any other subject that students find relevant and challenging.

A successful podcast should build a meaningful dialogue among group members and preferably invite a native English speaker (if possible) to participate as a guest in a section of the podcast. Throughout the project, students should employ and demonstrate their fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical comprehension skills in English.

Required Materials

  1. Recording equipment: it can be a mobile device, computer, or any other tool capable of recording in high quality.
  2. Audio editing software: free options like Audacity or GarageBand.
  3. Internet access for research and podcast publication.

Step by Step

  1. Group formation and selection of podcast topic: Each group must choose a compelling and common-interest topic for the podcast. It is important that the chosen topic is broad enough to foster an interesting discussion but specific enough to be covered in-depth within the podcast time.

  2. Organization and research: The group should organize itself and distribute responsibilities among members. This may include who will be part of the research, who will be in charge of recording, who will edit the podcast, etc. Research deeply on the chosen topic.

  3. Script: Develop a detailed script for the podcast with the lines of each participant. Practice each person's parts until they feel comfortable with the material.

  4. Rehearsal and recording: After practicing, it's time to enter the studio (or any quiet place) and record the podcast. Remember to speak clearly and keep the discussion engaging!

  5. Editing: Edit the podcast to improve sound quality, add music or sound effects, and eliminate errors or long silences.

  6. Review and publication: After finalizing the editing, review the podcast again as a group. When everyone is satisfied with the result, publish the podcast on a platform of your choice and share the link with the class.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit a written report in English and the link to the podcast posted on a file-sharing platform or podcast.

The report should include an introduction, where students will present the theme of their podcast, why they chose it, and why they consider it relevant. Then, in the development, students will explain in detail the process of creating the podcast, including the research conducted, the script created, how the recording was done, and how the audio was edited.

Students should also include a section addressing the challenges encountered during the work and how they were resolved. Additionally, they should discuss the results obtained and how the experience contributed to the development of their English skills.

Finally, in the conclusion, students should reflect on the project as a whole, focusing on their learnings and the importance of teamwork. In the bibliography, students should list the sources consulted throughout the project.

This activity is both an exercise in oral expression and teamwork, research, and time management. It is a great opportunity for students to apply and enhance their oral skills in a practical and fun format.
