Amazon: Biomes, Economy and Environmental Impacts: Review

Introduction

The Amazon is one of the planet's most biodiverse regions, home to an unparalleled array of plant and animal species. It covers a vast territory that stretches across several countries in South America, with the largest portion located in Brazil. The Amazon is composed of different biomes, which are regions with distinct characteristics of climate, geography, fauna, and flora.

Economically, the Amazon is extremely important. Many essential natural resources, such as timber, minerals, and biodiversity, are utilized, both legally and illegally. In addition, the Amazon region also plays a significant role in Brazilian agriculture and livestock, with extensive production and export of soybeans and beef.

The environmental impacts on the Amazon are immense. Several human activities have caused irreversible damage to the region's ecosystem, including deforestation, mining, predatory hunting and fishing, and river pollution. These activities not only threaten biodiversity but also contribute to worsening climate change, since the Amazon functions as one of the world's main "lungs," helping to regulate the global climate.

Importance of the Topic

Understanding the Amazon, its biomes, economy, and environmental impacts is crucial to taking informed and responsible actions regarding the environment. The current situation of the Amazon is a reflection of the choices we make in our daily lives, and of how much we value — or fail to value — nature and life on our planet.

The Amazon is a global heritage, and its preservation is a responsibility for all of us. Learning more about this region and the challenges it faces is an essential step for collaborating in its preservation. The role of education and schools is therefore fundamental in this process, allowing students to become more conscious citizens and active in the pursuit of a more sustainable world.

Practical Activity

Title of the Activity: A Focus on the Amazon: Biomes, Economy, and Environmental Impacts

Project Objective

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Amazon through research and presentation, highlighting the biodiversity of its biomes, its economic importance, and the environmental impacts caused by the exploitation of its natural resources.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, each responsible for exploring specific aspects of the Amazon: its biomes, economic importance, and environmental impacts. After completing their research, each group will produce a 10 to 15-minute documentary video explaining the selected topic with images, graphs, interviews, and other relevant information.

Necessary Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Notebook or smartphone for video recording
  • Video editing software (free options are available online)

Step-by-step instructions for carrying out the activity

  1. The first step involves research: each group must seek reliable information on their topic and select the most relevant points to include in the documentary. We recommend using the suggested resources in the contextualization, as well as other reliable sources.

  2. Next, the content of the documentary should be planned. It is important that the video includes an introduction to the topic, development of the main points, and a conclusion with reflections on the importance of the topic and possible solutions to the problems identified.

  3. After planning, it's time to produce the video. Students can use various forms of presentation: they can include graphs and maps, images of the Amazon, short dramatizations, interviews with experts (if possible), etc. Creativity is welcome!

  4. Finally, the video must be edited and finalized. It should be clear, informative, and engaging.

Project Deliverables and Connection with Activities

  1. Each group must deliver the documentary video, which will be presented to the entire class.

  2. In addition to the video, each group must prepare a written report following the guidelines below:

  • Introduction: Provides context for the topic, mentioning its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.

  • Development: Here, the theory behind the project's central theme should be explained, detailing the activity conducted, presenting the methodology used, and finally, presenting and discussing the results obtained. Important: this topic should be in line with what was presented in the video.

  • Conclusion: This topic should revisit the main points of the project, state the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  • Bibliography: This section should indicate the sources used to work on the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

This project aims not only to assess students' knowledge of the Amazon, but also to develop skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, problem solving, and creative thinking.
