Contextualization

Introduction

Nuclear energy is a form of energy produced from the nucleus of atoms, through processes of fission (division) or nuclear fusion (union). It is responsible for generating a significant portion of the electricity consumed in various countries around the world, such as France, the United States, and Japan. This fascinating and controversial topic, which combines science, technology, geopolitics, and ethics, will be the focus of our didactic project.

Understanding the concepts of radioactivity, nuclear fission and fusion, as well as the structure of nuclear reactors, is essential for understanding the production of nuclear energy. In addition, the socio-environmental and economic impacts of nuclear energy, including the production and disposal of radioactive waste, the possibility of nuclear accidents, and the implications in terms of security and national sovereignty, are relevant aspects that will be addressed in our work.

Finally, it will be important to discuss the geopolitical aspects of nuclear energy, such as the role of international atomic energy agencies, policies on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, tensions between countries with and without nuclear capabilities, and the challenges faced by countries that heavily rely on nuclear energy, such as Japan after the Fukushima disaster.

Contextualization

In the context of the 21st century, nuclear energy arouses interest due to the challenges related to climate change and the need to diversify the energy matrix. At the same time, the debate on the risks and impacts associated with nuclear energy is increasingly relevant, considering the nuclear disasters of Chernobyl and Fukushima, and the challenges of managing radioactive waste.

Countries differ significantly in their approach to nuclear energy. Some, like France and South Korea, heavily rely on nuclear energy for their electricity. Others, like Germany, have decided to move away from nuclear energy after the Fukushima disaster. At the same time, several developing countries are exploring nuclear energy as part of their energy development strategies.

"Geo-Political-Economic Analysis of Nuclear Energy Worldwide"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to conduct a deep and comprehensive analysis of nuclear energy in a geo-political-economic context. Students should research and investigate the key concepts related to nuclear energy, the global distribution of nuclear power plants, the socio-environmental and economic impacts of nuclear energy, and the international policies surrounding its use. By the end of the project, students should be able to critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy from a geographical, political, and economic perspective.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be conducted in groups of 3 to 5 students and should take at least 12 hours per student to complete. It should be developed over several weeks, with students working both inside and outside the classroom.

Part 1: Research and Information Gathering

Students should start by researching the fundamental concepts of nuclear energy, including the physics of nuclear fission and fusion, the operation of a nuclear reactor, and the nuclear fuel cycle. They should also research the major nuclear energy-producing countries and the international policies surrounding its use.

This research should be based on various reliable sources, such as books, scientific articles, and reports from official entities, like the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Part 2: Analysis and Debate

After the research, students should analyze and discuss the information gathered. They should analyze the global distribution of nuclear power plants and the role of nuclear energy in the energy matrix of different countries. They should evaluate the socio-environmental and economic impacts of nuclear energy, including the challenges of nuclear waste management and the risk of nuclear accidents.

They should then debate the international policies surrounding nuclear energy and their implications for international peace and security.

Part 3: Final Report

Students should compile their research and discussions into a detailed written report. The report should follow the format of a scientific article, including an introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion.
