Taylorism and Fordism are theories of work organization that changed the world of industry and economy in the 20th century. Both theories were developed during the Industrial Revolution and transformed the way mass production happens, directly impacting the lives of millions of workers worldwide.

Initially, we have Taylorism. Created by Frederick Winslow Taylor, this theory establishes that work should be divided and simplified to the maximum to increase efficiency and productivity. Time control was essential for Taylor, who sought maximum effectiveness in the use of human resources in production.

Next, we have Fordism. Developed by Henry Ford, founder of the Ford car company, the industrial system is based on linear and mass production. Ford's great innovation was the assembly line, which revolutionized the way products are made.

Taylorism and Fordism directly impacted the structuring of the industrial system and the global economy. The way we produce and consume consumer goods is directly related to these theories, so understanding how they work is essential to comprehend the dynamics of the world we live in.

Furthermore, understanding these theories is important to realize how they impacted the use of natural resources and the planet's sustainability. Mass production, with intensive use of natural resources, is a striking characteristic of the contemporary world and has direct implications for the planet's sustainability.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Building an Efficient Factory: From Taylorism to Fordism

Project Objective:

Reproduce in miniature a production line, initially based on the Taylorist model and later evolving into the Fordist methodology. The activity aims at a clear understanding of the concepts of Taylorism and Fordism, as well as fostering teamwork and time management.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of three to five members, will be challenged to create a "production line" for assembling a simple object, such as an origami or a construction toy. Initially, the production line must follow the principles of Taylorism, with task division and strict time control. Subsequently, the groups must evolve their production line to the Fordist model, including an assembly line.

Required Materials:

  • Paper and pens for planning
  • Origamis or construction toy pieces
  • Stopwatch for time control
  • Camera for process documentation

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity:

  1. Theoretical Study: Before anything else, students must study the concepts of Taylorism and Fordism, using the resources suggested in the introduction, as well as other sources they consider relevant.

  2. Production Line Planning: Next, the groups must start planning their production line. They need to decide which object they will assemble and how they will divide tasks among group members.

  3. Production Line Assembly (Taylorism): After the initial planning, the groups must assemble and test their production line based on the Taylorism principle. They need to consider times, movements, and task division according to the theory. The groups must document this entire process, including videos and photos.

  4. Adaptation to Fordism: After testing and documenting the Taylorist production line, the groups must adapt it to the Fordist model, introducing the assembly line into the process. Again, the process must be detailedly documented.

  5. Report Elaboration: Finally, each group must elaborate a report describing the entire process, from initial research to the conclusion of the Fordist production line. The report should contain sections of introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography, as specified earlier.

Each group has one month to complete the project, and it is estimated that each of the steps will take between five to ten hours per student, considering study, planning, production line assembly, documentation, and report elaboration.

Project Delivery:

The final project delivery consists of a written report and a video presentation documenting the entire process, from planning to project completion.

The report should follow the following structure:

  • Introduction: It should contextualize Taylorism and Fordism and the project's objective. Students should also indicate the relevance and application of these theories in the real world.
  • Development: This section should discuss the theory behind Taylorism and Fordism, the activity in detail, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Students should summarize their main points, explain what they learned, and draw conclusions about the theory and practice of Taylorism and Fordism.
  • Bibliography: Students should list the sources they used to develop the project.

The video should show the production line in operation in the Taylorist and Fordist models and should be accompanied by an explanatory narration of the process and the changes made between the two systems.

Thus, at the end of the project, students will have the opportunity not only to deepen their knowledge of Taylorism and Fordism but also to develop skills in teamwork, time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
