Capitalism: Review

Contextualization

Introduction

Capitalism is an economic system characterized by private ownership of the means of production, which are operated for profit. These means of production include things like factories, farms, mines, offices, stores, and other places where goods and services are produced.

Emerging in the 16th century with the voyages, the capitalist system has evolved over the centuries, going through different phases known as commercial, industrial, and financial capitalism, and more recently, the so-called capitalism 2.0.

Capitalism 2.0 refers to the recent evolution of capitalism to embrace more social and sustainable practices, accentuated by the technological, social, and environmental changes of the 21st century. It is characterized by the incorporation of practices and principles such as corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and corporate governance.

Relevance and application in the real world

Understanding the dynamics of capitalism and its different evolutions is fundamental to comprehending the economic, social, and political mechanisms of the contemporary world. Especially in the current context, where the capitalist system, and its new phase, impacts all aspects of life, from the level of employment and income to the preservation of the environment and the quality of life.

Capitalism 2.0 has significant implications for both the global economy and societies. With the incorporation of more responsible and sustainable practices, companies have a crucial role of driving positive changes in society and the environment.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Capitalism 2.0: A Market Simulation

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to understand the core concepts behind Capitalism 2.0 by creating and managing a "company" in a simulated environment. Students will have to adopt social responsibility, sustainability, and corporate governance principles, demonstrating how these concepts are applied in practice.

Detailed project description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and each group will be responsible for creating and managing a "company" in a simulated market environment. Each "company" will start with the same resources and objectives, but the way each group manages their "company" will determine their success or failure.

The activity will be divided into two main parts:

  1. Company Planning and Creation: Each group will spend the first part of the activity (approximately 1-2 hours) planning out their "company". They should define their mission, values, goals, and structures, always focusing on sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance.

  2. Company Operation: After establishing their company, groups will operate their "company" through a series of simulated "rounds" (approximately 2-3 hours).

Each "round" of the game will represent a period of time (for example, a quarter) in which groups must make various strategic decisions for their "company". Groups will have to deal with various challenges, including market competition, environmental issues, and social implications.

Required materials

  • Paper and pen for noting down ideas and strategies.
  • Computer with internet access for research.

Step-by-step guide to carrying out the activity

  1. Group formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5.

  2. Company definition: Each group will define their company's mission, values, and objectives. They should also create a business plan that includes marketing, production, and financial strategies.

  3. Company operation: Groups will operate their companies for a series of "rounds". In each round, groups will have to make decisions on how to deal with different challenges and opportunities.

  4. Assessment and reflection: After each round, there will be an assessment and reflection on the decisions made, the results achieved, and the impact on society and the environment.

Students should document all the stages of the activity, from the formation of the company to its operation and the decisions made, to be presented in a final report.

This final report should include the following sections:

  • Introduction: Explanation of the project and contextualization of the theme
  • Development: Detailed description of the company created, explanation of the decisions made and the results obtained in each round, presentation and discussion of how the company dealt with issues of sustainability, social responsibility and corporate governance
  • Conclusion: Reflection on the results of the project, the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn.
  • Bibliography: Citation of the sources that were used for research and support during the project.

Don't forget to include graphics, tables, and images that help illustrate the decisions and results of the company.
