Contextualization

Cartography is an ancient science that has been around since humans began to orient themselves spatially, needing to map their own territory. It is concerned with representing a geographical space and its characteristics in a reduced dimension, through a map. The main idea of cartography is the representation of space, however, as this science has advanced, it has also begun to represent time in its maps.

The evolution of cartography has been remarkable over the years, where today it is possible to create dynamic maps, with changes over time, thanks to the advancement of technology, especially with the growth of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Cartography is an inherently geographical subject, uniting the understanding of space and time in a unique way. In this project, we will explore this aspect of cartography, looking specifically at how time and space can be represented together on a map.

Cartography is a science of great importance to our lives, as it is widely used in various areas. In engineering, for example, it is common to use maps to identify the location and execution time of a project. In meteorology, maps are used to show the weather forecast in different regions. And in the health area, maps can show the progression of a disease in a time-space continuum.

Cartography has also become a vital tool in data visualization, allowing complex information to be presented in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Therefore, learning about cartography and how it represents time and space is an important skill not only in geography, but in any field that involves the visual representation of spatial and temporal data.

Practical Activity: Cartography of Time and Space

Objective of the Project

The main objective of this project is to provide students with a practical and dynamic view of how time and space can be represented on a map, in addition to providing a clear understanding of the fundamental role of cartography in various contexts of our daily lives.

In addition, it is expected that students learn to work in groups and improve their time management, communication, problem solving and creative thinking skills.

Project Description

In this project, groups of students will be challenged to create an "Evolution Map" of an area of their choice. This map should show the transformation of a given region over time, highlighting the changes that occur in space due to the action of time.

Each group will consist of 3 to 5 students and the total number of hours to be dedicated to the project, per student, should vary between 2 and 4 hours.

Material Required

  1. Internet access for research
  2. Paper and colored pens for map making
  3. Graphic editing software (can be free software, like GIMP)
  4. A3 or larger paper to print the final map

Project Step-by-Step

  1. Choosing the Study Area: The first step is to choose a geographical area that will be the object of study. This could be the city where the students live, a region of personal interest or a place of historical relevance.

  2. Preliminary Research: Then, students should conduct in-depth research on the study area, seeking to understand how this space has changed over time. It is important to collect information on the geography, history, economy, culture and demography of the area.

  3. Map Making: Based on the information gathered, students will create a map that represents the changes in the study area over time. The map should be colorful and easy to understand, with clear legends and relevant information.

  4. Map Presentation: Finally, each group should present their map to the class, explaining the changes that have occurred in the study area over time and discussing the relevance of these changes.

Project Delivery and Written Document Preparation

In addition to the practical execution of the project, groups must submit a written report that includes four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

  1. Introduction: It should contain the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of the project.

  2. Development: In this section, the group should explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: This part is where the group should resume their main points, explain the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report is extremely important, as it will be possible to evaluate not only the technical knowledge acquired by the students, but also their teamwork and time management skills, in addition to other socio-emotional skills.
