It happened in two stages, the first in the 18th century in England, and the second at the end of the 19th century, with a main focus on Germany and the United States. The precise definition of the beginning of each of the two stages may vary among historians since there was no 'start button' to initiate these revolutions, but rather a gradual and continuous process of technological and industrial evolution.

The first industrial revolution is marked by the transition from manufacturing to mechanical industry. The invention of the steam engine was one of the main factors that enabled the industrial growth of the time. The second industrial revolution, in turn, was marked by the development of the chemical, electrical, petroleum industries, as well as steel. Inventions such as the incandescent light bulb, the telegraph, and the electric locomotive are products of this era.

Relevance of the Theme

Understanding these historical events is essential to comprehend how the evolution of the modern production system occurred, as well as the formation of the current global industrial centers. Furthermore, observing the impact that these revolutions had on society, the economy, and the environment in which they occurred is an essential tool to understand the challenges of the current world, from the climate crisis to socio-economic inequalities.

Practical Activity: 'Connecting the Present to the Past: 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolution'

Project Objective

Allow students to understand the magnitude and impact of the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolution through dramatization and manual-graphic representation, as well as to understand the legacy left by these revolutions in current society and how they shape the modern world.

Project Description

Divided into groups of three to five students, each will be responsible for researching and presenting a specific aspect of the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolution, whether it be technological evolution, changes in work processes, socio-environmental impact, among others.

The presentation must include a dramatization related to the researched theme and a graphic material (poster, mind map, timeline, infographic, etc.) that synthesizes the most important information.

Necessary Materials

1. Books and Internet resources for research.
2. Materials for scenography of the dramatization (costumes, objects, etc.).
3. Materials for the elaboration of the graphic material (paper, colored pens, post-its, etc.).

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Each group chooses or is assigned an aspect of the 1st and 2nd Industrial Revolution to delve into.
2. Students should start the research, using the suggested resources and others found.
3. After the research, the group should prepare a dramatic representation illustrating the chosen theme, whether it's a 'typical day' of a worker from that time or the 'discovery' of a new technology, for example.
4. Simultaneously, the group creates a graphic material that synthesizes the information learned during the research. This material should contain a summary of the main information about the theme and how it impacted the society of the time.
5. After completing steps 3 and 4, each group should prepare a presentation for the class, where the dramatization will be performed and the graphic material will be shown and explained.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical part of the project, the groups should prepare a report that will include the following topics:

1. Introduction: The group must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
2. Development: The group must explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
3. Conclusion: The group must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
4. Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report should be delivered one week after the presentation and will serve as a complement to the practical work carried out, systematizing the knowledge acquired during the research and dramatization. It is important for students to reflect on the main lessons learned and highlight how this knowledge can be applied in their lives and in the current world.
