Non-renewable energies, which include oil, coal, natural gas, and uranium, are finite natural resources. They formed over millions of years, and the speed at which we consume these sources often exceeds the planet's renewability.

Our society is extremely dependent on these energy sources. They are used for electricity production, heating environments, fueling vehicles, among many other applications. Despite this, the exploration and use of non-renewable energy sources have significant impacts on the environment and society, both locally and globally.

The relevance of studying non-renewable energies lies in the need to understand the importance of these resources, their impacts, and the implications of their continuous and possibly unsustainable use. Consequently, learning about these energy sources is crucial in the current context of climate change and in the search for possible solutions for a more sustainable future.

Project Introduction

This project aims to develop students' understanding of one of the main non-renewable energy sources: oil. Recognizing the importance of oil as a dominant energy source in modern society, students will investigate the oil exploration process, its applications, socio-environmental impacts, and the relationship between oil producers and consumers.

The project will be developed in groups of 3 to 5 students, where everyone should work together to conduct research, compile information, and present their findings in a clear and interesting way. This proposed project is an excellent opportunity for students to develop essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and time management.

Practical Activity

Title: Exploration and Impacts of Oil

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to investigate the position of oil as a non-renewable energy source, its exploration process, uses, socio-environmental impacts, and the interaction between producers and consumers.

Project Description

Students should conduct detailed research on the exploration and use of oil, focusing on the following areas:

• Origin and formation of oil
• Oil extraction process
• Main oil producers and consumers
• Various uses of oil in society
• Socio-environmental impacts of oil exploration

Next, each group should create a digital interactive map showing the largest oil producers and consumers around the world and presenting the main socio-economic and environmental impacts of oil exploration in these locations.

Required Materials

• Computers with internet access
• Interactive map creation program (Suggestion: Google Earth)
• Image editing software (Suggestion: Canva, GIMP)

Step by Step

1. Task division: Each group should divide tasks among members. These tasks include: research on each topic, creation of the interactive map, writing the final report.
2. Research: Students should start their research on the indicated topics, using the sources recommended by the teacher. It is important for students to be encouraged to go beyond these sources and seek other reliable resources.
3. Creation of the interactive map: Each group should use the interactive map creation program to create a map showing the largest oil producers and consumers, as well as the main socio-economic and environmental impacts of oil exploration in these locations.
4. Writing the report: Students should compile their findings into a final report, following the proposed format (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, Bibliography).
5. Final presentation: Each group should present their interactive map and share their findings with the class.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical part of the project, students must submit a report discussing their findings. This report should include:

1. Introduction: This section should include a brief introduction to the topic, why it is important, and the project's objective.
2. Development: Here, students should detail their research, explain the method they used to collect information, how they created the interactive map, and what discoveries they made during the project.
3. Conclusion: Students should discuss what they learned during the project, recap the key points of the work, and talk about the implications of their findings for the future.
4. Bibliography: Students should cite all sources used during the project.

In addition to the report, the created digital interactive map is also a project deliverable. Students should include a link to the map in their report and present it to the class during their final presentation.
