Theoretical Introduction
Our planet is composed of various biomes, each with its own ecosystems, characteristic flora, and fauna. In general terms, biomes are divided into: forests, savannas, grasslands, deserts, tundras, aquatic environments, and human biomes. Each biome has specific characteristics that make it unique.
In this project, we will specifically address the Tropical Forest, Savanna, and Tundra biomes, as they are extremely different from each other, presenting a diversified range of fauna, flora, geographical distribution, and human impacts. Understanding the different biomes and their characteristics allows us to comprehend how the planet's biodiversity is formed and distributed, and how different factors can interfere with its preservation.
For example, the Tropical Forest is known for being the most biodiverse biome on the planet, with high levels of precipitation and temperatures, and dense vegetation cover. Savannas, on the other hand, are characterized by a mixture of forest and desert features, with well-defined dry and rainy seasons. The tundra is the coldest biome on the planet, with frozen soils and flora and fauna adapted to this extreme environment.
Contextualization
A deep understanding of the biomes on our planet is essential for us to be active agents in environmental conservation. Understanding the unique characteristics of each biome allows us to perceive the impact of human actions, such as deforestation in the Tropical Forest or oil exploration in the Tundra.
This understanding is even more relevant in a context of climate change, which can alter entire biome dynamics and threaten species that inhabit them. Therefore, the study of biomes is an important step towards building environmental and civic awareness that enables us to make more sustainable and respectful decisions for our planet.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Exploring the Biomes of the World: Tropical Forest, Savanna, and Tundra"
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to deepen students' knowledge about the Tropical Forest, Savanna, and Tundra biomes. The project aims to explore the diversity of these biomes, understand their unique characteristics, and analyze the human impacts and threats each one faces.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for exploring one of the three biomes (Tropical Forest, Savanna, or Tundra). The group must research and identify the following information about the chosen biome:
- General description of the biome.
- Geographical location and global distribution of the biome.
- Main climatic characteristics.
- Predominant fauna and flora.
- Human actions impacting the biome and their consequences.
- Conservation initiatives and strategies.
The group should create a visual presentation, which can be an infographic, a poster, or a slide presentation, and a detailed written report about the chosen biome.
Required Materials:
- Internet access for research.
- Graphic editing programs (such as Canva, Google Slides, PowerPoint, or any other of your choice).
- Geography textbooks and educational materials.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
- Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 people.
- Each group will choose or be assigned one of the three biomes: Tropical Forest, Savanna, or Tundra.
- The groups will conduct in-depth research on their chosen biome, using online resources, books, and educational materials.
- The groups should gather information and data about: general description of the biome, geographical location and distribution, climatic characteristics, predominant fauna and flora, human impacts, and conservation initiatives.
- Based on the collected information, the groups will create a visual presentation (infographic, poster, or slide presentation) about their biome.
- The groups will write a detailed report about their biome, following the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.
Project Deliverables:
The groups must deliver a visual presentation and a written report.
The visual presentation should highlight the main aspects of the biome, presenting data and information clearly and visually appealing. This presentation can be developed in the format that each group finds most suitable: infographic, poster, or slide presentation.
The written report should be clear, detailed, and well-structured, following the following structure:
- Introduction: Brief context about the biome, its relevance, and the work's objective.
- Development: Detailed description of the biome, including:
- General description of the biome.
- Geographical location and distribution.
- Climatic characteristics.
- Predominant fauna and flora.
- Human impacts and consequences.
- Conservation initiatives and strategies.
- Discussion of results and critical analysis.
- Conclusion: Final reflection on what was learned, the importance of the biome, and its conservation.
- Bibliography: Citation of all references used in the research.
The estimated time for the execution of this project is 5 to 10 hours per student, with a deadline of one month after the groups are divided.
